As part of the public education system in Nova Scotia, the Strait Regional Centre for Education (SRCE) was established on April 1, 2018, to deliver the public school program focusing on supporting student learning, achievement, well-being and overall success.  The Strait Regional Centre for Education, with the support of approximately 1,166 employees, works diligently to achieve its mission “to empower our children and youth, within safe, equitable and inclusive environments to embrace a changing world as responsible, contributing and successful lifelong learners.”  In 2025-2026, the SRCE operates 20 schools with approximately 5,948 students; and approximately 375 children are attending pre-primary programs at 14 school locations.  Located in the northeastern part of Nova Scotia, the Strait Regional Centre for Education’s jurisdiction encompasses the counties of Antigonish, Guysborough, Inverness and Richmond, an area of approximately 11,000 square kilometres with a population of 53,742 (Census 2021).

Work Schedule: Monday to Friday 7:00AM - 3:30PM

BUILDING OPERATOR

Responsibilities:

 

  • Ensure the proper instructional environment and building safety through the use of building energy management and safety systems, in accordance with established practices and standards;
  • Oversee janitorial staff to ensure that assigned duties are performed;
  • Carry out a preventive maintenance program as established by the Strait Regional Centre for Education;
  • Inspect, on a regular basis, all areas of the school (including the interior and exterior of the building,)and grounds and performing repairs and ensuring that required janitorial assistance is provided;
  • Ensure the proper utilization and control of building materials, tools, equipment and custodial supplies;
  • Keep accurate records of all preventive maintenance, work orders, purchase orders, employee time sheets, inventory, snow removal logs, security logs, etc.;
  • Coordinate physical requirements for school rentals, dances, tournaments, and other activities;
  • Conduct installation, maintenance and repairs of the school plant;
  • Assist in after-hours emergencies (evenings, weekend, and holiday coverage), and be available for weekend coverage as required by the Strait Regional Centre for Education;
  • Perform duties in compliance with school, Operations Department, and SRCE policies and procedures including occupational health, safety, attendance, work routines, WHMIS and evacuation plans and the laws of the Province of Nova Scotia;
  • Other related duties as assigned.
     
    Essential Qualifications:
     
  • Red Seal journeyperson certification in a building trade; and Five years’ experience working in preventative maintenance, operation and repair of building systems, and heating and ventilations systems, including heat pumps and air conditioning units;
    OR
  • Strait Regional Centre for Education equivalency for the Red Seal and five years’ experience, which includes the following:
                    Approved Courses in a Building Environmental Systems Operator Program.
    Required modules or courses would include Building Systems, Heating, Air Handling, Air Conditioning, Electrical, Controls and water treatment.
    Two week approved building operator practicum placement within the SRCE.
    Five years’ custodial experience within the SRCE.
  • Experience in the use of building related software, and DDC controls and energy management systems.
  • Previously demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
  • Previously demonstrated organizational skills.
  • Excellent knowledge of OHS procedures and regulations.
  • Excellent technology and computer skills.
  • Current WHMIS certification or willing to obtain prior to employment.
  • Current CPR & First Aid certification or willing to obtain prior to employment.
  • Ability to ensure that all aspects of building maintenance and usage of the school are satisfied and emergencies are dealt with as they arise.

 

       Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience supervising janitorial and building trades working in a team environment is an asset.
