As part of the public education system in Nova Scotia, the Strait Regional Centre for Education (SRCE) was established on April 1, 2018, to deliver the public school program focusing on supporting student learning, achievement, well-being and overall success. The Strait Regional Centre for Education, with the support of approximately 1,166 employees, works diligently to achieve its mission “to empower our children and youth, within safe, equitable and inclusive environments to embrace a changing world as responsible, contributing and successful lifelong learners.” In 2025-2026, the SRCE operates 20 schools with approximately 5,948 students; and approximately 375 children are attending pre-primary programs at 14 school locations. Located in the northeastern part of Nova Scotia, the Strait Regional Centre for Education’s jurisdiction encompasses the counties of Antigonish, Guysborough, Inverness and Richmond, an area of approximately 11,000 square kilometres with a population of 53,742 (Census 2021).

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8 hrs./day

ROLE: Performs work up to and including journey level trades in motor vehicle maintenance and repairs and oversees the day-to-day operation of the bus garage, including the carrying out of regular vehicular repairs and preventive maintenance schedule for the bus fleet.
Responsibilities:
Oversee the work of assigned staff and promote practices which enhance the safe operation of the garage and the mechanical operation of the bus fleet and other Strait Regional Centre for Education vehicles in accordance with established standards, the laws of the Province of Nova Scotia and Strait Regional Centre for Education Policies and Procedures;
Establish and carry out repair work and preventive maintenance programs in co-operation with the Immediate Supervisor and ensuring that the necessary supplies and equipment are in stock to implement such programs;
Prioritize and assign work to mechanics working in a bus garage;
Maintain a preventative maintenance program for the bus fleet;
Ensure a complete inventory of required parts and materials are in stock in the garage and maintained;
Complete all assigned work orders, and record hours and materials used;
To report to the immediate supervisor issues and concerns impacting on the safety of the garage staff, bus staff, or student transportation;
To certify all repair and inspection reports;
Respond to any after hour emergencies as required;
Ensure a clean, safe work environment according to Board policies and procedures;
Maintain the safe operation of all equipment used in the bus garage;
Perform all mechanical duties as assigned;
Other related duties as assigned;
Qualifications:
Must have Bus & Transport Mechanic's Certification;
Must have a valid Nova Scotia Driver's License;
Must be willing and able to obtain a Class 2B-2C or Class 1B-1C license with air brake endorsement;
Must own mechanical tools for use in the shop;
Must have knowledge and experience in diesel repair and school bus maintenance;
Must have the ability and experience to develop efficient work schedules, and effectively supervise the work of fellow employees in daily repair and maintenance work;
Must have the ability to promote harmony and good working relations within the fleet maintenance team;
Must have the ability to maintain records in an orderly manner and complete reports as required by the Motor Carrier Branch of the Utilities and Review Board, and by SRCE management;
Must be able to carry out mechanical repairs as required;
Must ensure that a safe and orderly work environment is maintained, and remain current with all applicable safety related requirements;
1 year experience in a supervisory or management role (asset)
Experience in mentoring apprentices within the mechanic classification (asset)
