As part of the public education system in Nova Scotia, the Strait Regional Centre for Education (SRCE) was established on April 1, 2018, to deliver the public school program focusing on supporting student learning, achievement, well-being and overall success.  The Strait Regional Centre for Education, with the support of approximately 1,050 employees, works diligently to achieve its mission “to empower our children and youth, within safe, equitable and inclusive environments to embrace a changing world as responsible, contributing and successful lifelong learners.”  In 2024-2025, the SRCE operates 20 schools with approximately 5,954 students; and approximately 375 children are attending pre-primary programs at 14 school locations.  Located in the northeastern part of Nova Scotia, the Strait Regional Centre for Education’s jurisdiction encompasses the counties of Antigonish, Guysborough, Inverness and Richmond, an area of approximately 11,000 square kilometres with a population of 53,742 (Census 2021).

The Assistant Manager of Bus Fleet Maintenance salary falls under the Provincial Non-Union Compensation Framework, Band 8 with an August 1st salary range from $73,462.00 to $91,828.00 to be determined based on education and experience.

 

Work Schedule: 7 hrs/day; 12 mths/year

Assistant Manager of Fleet Maintenance

 

Role:

Supporting leadership role responsible for ensuring the SRCE school bus and maintenance vehicle fleet is functioning efficiently. Duties of the position include ensuring preventive maintenance is performed.

To assist with the management of processes relative to the equipping, operation and maintenance of the Strait Regional Centre for Education’s vehicle fleet, vehicle service and associated garage operations.

 

Responsibilities:

  • To assist with the quality control in all aspects of the Regional Centre’s garage operation including mechanical services, body work and field operations involving mobile mechanical services;         
  • To assist in the supervision of employees engaged in garage and fleet maintenance activities;
  • To assist in ensuring operations relating to the bus fleet and garage are in compliance with directives of regulatory agencies, provincial regulations, and Regional Centre policy, including but not limited to regulations of the Motor Carrier Division of Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board, the Registry of Motor Vehicles, and the National Transportation Safety Board;
  • To maintain records required by provincial regulation relating to the operation of a bus fleet, including but not limited to:  
    • Pre-trip inspection reports
    • Work orders
    • Fleet registration
    • Insurance
    • SB plates including certificates of authorization
  • To support the implementation, management and analysis of fleet programs relative to preventative maintenance and make recommendation for improvements;
  • To participate in the design and delivery of training programs for garage staff, including safety tool box talks;
  • To assist in the administration of the CUPE Collective Agreement and other aspects of labour relations and human resources management;
  • To report and assist in the investigation of incidents involving Regional Centre owned and operated vehicles;
  • To communicate with payroll department, compile reports and liaise with members of the transportation management team;
  • To use Dossier and GPS software programs for daily administrative tasks;
  • To undertake other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Operations and Manager of Transportation;
  • Responsible for requisitioning supplies and materials for the transportation department and maintaining appropriate inventory control.

 

Qualifications:

 • A combination of formal post-secondary education and experience as it relates to management of a large transportation department;

•  Successful working experience in large fleet maintenance service;

•  Training and/or experience in the utilization of computer software related to fleet maintenance and other business related applications;

•  Strong organizational, communication, leadership, management and interpersonal skills.
