As part of the public education system in Nova Scotia, the Strait Regional Centre for Education (SRCE) was established on April 1, 2018, to deliver the public school program focusing on supporting student learning, achievement, well-being and overall success. The Strait Regional Centre for Education, with the support of approximately 1,050 employees, works diligently to achieve its mission “to empower our children and youth, within safe, equitable and inclusive environments to embrace a changing world as responsible, contributing and successful lifelong learners.” In 2024-2025, the SRCE operates 20 schools with approximately 5,981 students; and approximately 375 children are attending pre-primary programs at 14 school locations. Located in the northeastern part of Nova Scotia, the Strait Regional Centre for Education’s jurisdiction encompasses the counties of Antigonish, Guysborough, Inverness and Richmond, an area of approximately 11,000 square kilometres with a population of 53,742 (Census 2021).

Job Description:
General maintenance duties as required to execute the Strait Regional Centre for Education Summer Maintenance Program. The primary focus for these positions will be painting & high dust cleaning, although other duties may be assigned. The successful applicants will be required to move to various building sites for the duration of this employment, and will be responsible for transportation to and from the work site.
Responsibilities:
- Perform semi-skilled maintenance, repair and construction work in the basic trades such as carpentry, cleaning, plumbing and heating, painting, minor electrical, glazing, roofing and locksmithing as required in accordance with established practices and standards;
- Provide labour, assist with maintenance, construction and demolition of school buildings and grounds in compliance with established practices and standards;
- Receive and/or pick up materials and goods from suppliers;
- Maintain accurate records of work performance through use of approved work order system;
- Responsible for assigned vehicles and equipment in compliance with established practices and standards;
- Perform duties in compliance with school, Operations Department and SRCE policies and procedures, including occupational health, safety, work routines, WHMIS and evacuation plans and the laws of the Province of Nova Scotia ;
- Other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience working in a building construction and maintenance environment;
- Valid Driver's License;
- Must have access to a reliable vehicle;
- Physical and mechanical aptitude to perform a full range of construction, maintenance and manual tasks;
- Ability and dexterity in the use of various manual and powered hand tools
- Ability to work with minimum supervision
- Knowledge of OHS regulations and safety procedures
- Current WHMIS certification.
- The successful applicant MUST demonstrate a high level of proficiency in the preparation and application of paint finishes in a commercial environment. It will be expected that the individuals selected will demonstrate this proficiency through the work they are assigned to carry out.
- Fall arrest certification is required (or willingness to acquire prior to commencing the term assignment).
