As part of the public education system in Nova Scotia, the Strait Regional Centre for Education (SRCE) was established on April 1, 2018, to deliver the public school program focusing on supporting student learning, achievement, well-being and overall success. The Strait Regional Centre for Education, with the support of approximately 1,050 employees, works diligently to achieve its mission “to empower our children and youth, within safe, equitable and inclusive environments to embrace a changing world as responsible, contributing and successful lifelong learners.” In 2024-2025, the SRCE operates 20 schools with approximately 5,981 students; and approximately 375 children are attending pre-primary programs at 14 school locations. Located in the northeastern part of Nova Scotia, the Strait Regional Centre for Education’s jurisdiction encompasses the counties of Antigonish, Guysborough, Inverness and Richmond, an area of approximately 11,000 square kilometres with a population of 53,742 (Census 2021).

Scope of Responsibilities
The Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Teacher is one of the educational leaders in the classroom and will ensure that the Public Schools Program and curricula are implemented in a way that commits to equity, diversity, inclusivity, and high expectations for student learning and achievement. The SEL Teacher will demonstrate a strong commitment to student success planning in support of student achievement and well-being and reports directly to the School Principal.
Competencies Required
The SEL Teacher shall have the following competencies:
- Knowledge and skill in content and pedagogy to provide high-quality teaching in the area of social and emotional learning;
- The ability to use broad knowledge and information from different sources to make the curriculum accessible and engaging for students;
- The ability to plan instructional goals and provincial curriculum outcomes for all students through culturally responsive teaching and to clearly communicate those to learners;
- The ability to assess and analyze student behaviour in a school setting;
- The ability to provide culturally-responsive and student-centered responses to differences in student behaviour associated with culture, language, and life experience and address unacceptable student behaviour in an equitable, consistent and fair manner;
- The ability to adapt curriculum to meet the varying rates, patterns and needs of all students, including students who extend learning beyond designated outcomes;
- The ability to effectively contribute to and respond to diverse student learning needs through individualized program planning;
- The ability to align assessment activities with learning outcomes to guide teaching and learning, monitor student progress, engage students in self-assessment and evaluate information from a variety of sources to support equitable and responsive student assessment;
- The ability to create and maintain positive learning environments that are equitable, inclusive, and safe;
- The ability to establish respectful relationships with students and actively involve students in the creation, implementation, and self-monitoring of classroom behavioural expectations;
- The ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, parents/guardians, community and outside agencies to better meet with the needs of students;
- The ability to demonstrate fair and ethical judgements;
- The ability to utilize educational technologies as an integral part of teaching;
- The ability to work as a contributing team member and to co-teach with classroom teachers;
- The ability to apply knowledge, experience and commitment in the areas of race relations, culturally relevant pedagogy, cross cultural understanding, human rights and diversity;
- The desire and ability to engage in continuing education and professional learning;
- The ability to maintain and promote confidentiality.
JOB DESCRIPTION
- Valid Nova Scotia Teaching Certificate;
- Elementary Teaching Methods Courses at corresponding levels;
- Masters Degree in Education in the area of Inclusive Education, Supporting Diverse Learners, Mental Health or acceptable equivalent that has a focus on social and emotional learning.
- 5+ years successful teaching experience
Specific Job Components
The SEL Teacher shall perform tasks as assigned by the School Principal. These tasks may vary from time to time with the evolution of the organization and may include, but not be limited to the following:
- Share the responsibility with other team members of interpreting and reporting assessment results and other pertinent information with parents/guardians, administrators and other professionals;
- Lead culturally responsive SEL teaching that reflects the diverse cultures, languages, life experiences, and backgrounds of students. Adapt curriculum, assessment, and learning resources so that all students see themselves reflected in their school;
- Promote student well-being and achievement in collaboration with other staff;
- Actively pursue leadership roles in the school and promote leadership opportunities in the classroom;
- Promote problem solving, cooperative negotiating skills and conflict resolution strategies and involve students in the creation, implementation, and self-monitoring of classroom behavioural expectations;
- Model and teach about best practices in developing emotional awareness, relationship-based practices, co-regulation and self-regulation, and problem solving;
- Adhere to school-wide behavioural expectations for students;
- Develop positive and supportive relationships with students, characterized by mutual respect;
- Structure lessons that encourage risk-taking in learning and model life-long learning;
- Regularly attend Teaching Support Team meetings to support capacity building in relation to behavioral / SEL strategies both classroom wide and school wide;
- Participate on Student Planning Teams to assist in problem solving and program planning, as needed;
- Lead school staff to help identify practices for social emotional learning instruction and support for school wide and small groups;
- Support and be an integral part of the school team responsible for well-being goals as identified through student success planning;
- Use data to deepen relationships and improve support for small groups of students;
- Model and teach about best practices in developing emotional awareness, relationship-based practices, co-regulation and self-regulation, and problem solving
- Co-teaching at the tier one level integrating SEL competencies into curriculum and routines with the classroom teacher;
