The Tri-County Regional Centre for Education (TCRCE) encompasses the three (3) Counties of Shelburne, Yarmouth, and Digby serving approximately 6100 students in twenty-two (22) schools, composed of 13 Elementary Schools, 6 High Schools, 1 Middle School, and 2 Elementary/High Schools.

Scope of Responsibilities

The Learning Disabilities Teacher is responsible for providing appropriate supportive educational services to students with diagnosed learning disabilities. As a member of the Student Services team, they are committed to supporting students, families, and school-based staff in the areas of interpretation of assessments results, appropriate academic/social programming, self-advocacy skills and transitioning requirements.

The Learning Disabilities Teacher shall have the following competencies:

  2. The ability to provide leadership to a multi-disciplinary team in support of student success;
  3. The ability to provide leadership in the collection, analysis and interpretation of data related to  programming, supports and services;
  4. The ability to utilize current technologies as it relates to education;
  5. The ability to apply knowledge and experience in the areas of race relations, cross cultural understanding, human rights and diversity;
  6. The desire and ability to engage in continuing education and professional development;
  7. Demonstrated ability to engage and work with diverse communities;
  8. The ability to provide literacy support/coaching to students and teachers within classrooms;
  9. The ability to monitor, assess and evaluate student progress;
  10. The ability to provide leadership in the collection, analysis and interpretation of data related to student achievement;
  11.  The ability to develop and maintain positive relationships that foster a climate of trust and respect;
  12. The ability to maintain a healthy and positive perspective on change and support others in the change process;
  13. The ability to work and communicate effectively within the Regional Centre with students, parents/guardians, and community groups;
  14. The ability to demonstrate strong oral and written communication skills; 
  15. The ability to apply knowledge, experience, and commitment in the area of race relations, cross cultural understanding, human rights, diversity and culturally relevant pedagogy.

 

Qualifications

  1. Master of Education with a special education concentration and/or Master of Literacy Instruction;
  2. Qualified Level B Assessor;
  3. Professional Development training in the area of Learning Disabilities;
  4. Training in mentorship and or coaching;
  5. Experience administering and interpreting Level B Assessments;
  6. Experience as a Learning Support Teacher;
  7. Experience providing professional development to small and large groups;
  8. Experience providing support to school staff in the form of contributions to program plans and classroom implementation of strategies;
  9. Experience utilizing and recommending assistive technology for student use;
  10. 5 Years of successful experience as a classroom teacher.

 

Specific Job Components

The Learning Disabilities Teacher shall perform tasks as are assigned by the Coordinator of Student Services in conjunction with the school administration. These tasks may vary, from time to time, with the evolution of the support required and may include but not be limited to the following:

  • Will work in classrooms with teachers and students supporting inclusive practices.
  • Provide leadership for professional development in the area of literacy and learning disabilities.
  • Attend ongoing professional development provided by the region.
  • Provide coaching to teachers on best practices and supports at TIER 1, 2 and 3.
  • Work in classrooms with teachers and students to support literacy development and independent learning for students.
  • Provide direct intervention support to students as determined through program planning.
  • Provide transitional and advocacy support for students diagnosed with a learning disability.
  • Communicate results, plan, and implement actions for improvement.
  • Other duties as assigned.
