The Tri-County Regional Centre for Education (TCRCE) encompasses the three (3) Counties of Shelburne, Yarmouth, and Digby serving approximately 6100 students in twenty-two (22) schools, composed of 13 Elementary Schools, 6 High Schools, 1 Middle School, and 2 Elementary/High Schools.

Title: LITERACY SUPPORT TEACHER / COACH P-6

JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Literacy Support Teacher/Coach P-6 will support students, teachers, and administrators through the provincial framework of coaching (using a student-centered approach) under the Multi-Tiered System of Supports. They will promote the development of literacy skills, with teachers, for students using best evidence-based practices.
The Literacy Support Teacher/Coach P-6 is expected to:

Provide mentoring support to teachers and principals within the framework established by the Nova Scotia Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, and support TCRCE regional initiatives (e.g., System Improvement Plan, SSPs).

Work in classrooms with teachers to improve student achievement through evidence-based literacy instruction and assessment practices.

Create a literacy-rich environment conducive to effective instruction.

Demonstrate (model and co-teach) reading and writing strategies in classrooms.

Evaluate students’ literacy needs and collaborate with teachers and school teams to interpret assessment data, monitor progress, improve instruction, and determine next steps.

Model a range of assessment tools to support sound instructional decisions based on curriculum outcomes.

Collaborate with teachers to examine student work, monitor progress, and support teacher reflection and action.

Assist teachers in analyzing formal and informal assessment data to determine students' response to instruction.

Support teachers in planning, sequencing, and scaffolding literacy instruction.

Model Tier 1 whole class/small-group and/or Tier 2/3 individualized instruction for students identified for literacy support.

Assist with Tier 2/3 individualized instruction for students identified for literacy support when deemed necessary by supervisor.

Actively participate on the Teaching Support Team, providing input on student literacy development and monitoring progress.

Attend meetings and ongoing professional development with the TCRCE regional literacy team.

Assist in planning and delivering professional development sessions, as needed.

Collaborate with teachers to develop long-range and daily instructional plans.

Use a variety of assessment strategies, including daily observations and informal assessments, to inform instruction.

Perform other literacy-related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications/Experience
-
A valid Nova Scotia Teaching Certificate;
-
Experience with small-group reading/writing instruction (using best evidence based approaches);
-
Minimum five (5) years recent, successful classroom teaching experience in literacy instruction; teaching using the workshop framework at the P-6 level;

Leadership experience with literacy initiatives at the classroom/school, region, and/or provincial levels(s) would be preferred;

Experience working as Coach/Mentor is an asset;
-
Training in Early Literacy Support/Structured Literacy approaches considered an asset.

The Literacy Support Teacher/Coach shall have the following competencies:

The desire and ability to work in classrooms alongside teacher colleagues and contribute collaboratively as a team member;

The ability to utilize current technologies to perform work related procedures including data collection;

The ability to apply knowledge, experience and commitment in the areas of race relations, cross cultural understanding, human rights and diversity and culturally relevant pedagogy;

The desire and ability to engage in continuing education and professional development;

The ability to maintain and promote confidentiality and professionalism;

Communicate effectively in written and oral form using positive interpersonal skills;

Employ effective coaching skills;

Coach, with teachers, in effective instructional strategies in a variety of content areas;

Use effective strategies for differentiating instruction;

Exhibit knowledge of outcomes-based curriculum.
