The Tri-County Regional Centre for Education (TCRCE) encompasses the three (3) Counties of Shelburne, Yarmouth, and Digby serving approximately 6100 students in twenty-two (22) schools, composed of 13 Elementary Schools, 6 High Schools, 1 Middle School, and 2 Elementary/High Schools.

Position: Student Services Consultant / Autism Support Teacher


Reports to: Coordinator of Student Services 


Location: Yarmouth County Schools 

 

It is the role of the Student Services Consultant to collaborate with school-based and regional staff supporting the implementation of the Inclusive Education Policy throughout the system. All aspects of the Program Planning Process including gifted and talented education, transition planning, adaptations, individual program planning, and documentation of the process are included in the scope of responsibilities. The consultant works within an inclusive framework to support the work of Teaching Support Teams, Student Planning Teams, classroom teachers, learning support teachers, and teacher assistants. Working collaboratively with a team of educational professionals, the student services consultant supports all aspects of student learning and well-being. 

 

The Student Services Consultant is responsible to assist in the development of Teaching Support Teams, and Student Planning Teams and in the ongoing monitoring of their effective operation, and to the degree possible, attend these team meetings. The consultant provides and maintains effective lines of communication among schools, parents/guardians, support services, and outside agencies. The Student Services Consultant is responsible to coordinate and facilitate cooperation among all individuals responsible for the assessment, development, and evaluation of the programs for students.

 

Qualifications

  • Master Degree in Special Education, or acceptable equivalent
  • A valid Nova Scotia Teaching Certificate

Experience

    • Minimum five (5) years successful teaching experience
    • Minimum five (5) years successful student services teaching experience
    • Experience and demonstrated competence in providing professional development for school-based and regional staff

Accountabilities

  • Provide leadership and coordination in the delivery of provincial and Regional Centre Special Education policies from implementation to evaluation and the effectiveness of the delivery process;
  • Support the implementation of all Provincial and Regional Policies and Guidelines with an Inclusive Education lens;
  • Ability to assess the needs and engage staff in professional growth of evidence-based strategies;
  • Participate in budget planning and preparation;
  • Establish and maintain partnerships with all relevant community groups;
  • Be a collegial decision maker, yet decisive and consistent;
  • Create and implement strategic plans of instructional programs;
  • Monitor, assess, and support student progress;
  • Provide leadership in the collection, analysis and interpretation of data related to student achievement and well-being;
  • Assist Teaching Support Teams and Student Planning Teams with developing appropriate programming;
  • Provide Professional Development for school staff and regional staff around programming and planning for students;
  • Promote and support Culturally Responsive practices throughout the program planning process;
  • Monitor and support the implementation of Alternate Education Programs;
  • Collaborate with administration to support appropriate educational programming based on the presenting needs of the students through a school wide delivery model;
  • Participate in planning as it relates to staff allocation for Teacher Assistants and Learning Support staff;
  • Participate in the development of an annual implementation plan for Student Services, including a framework for implementation costs, timelines, communications, strategies for evaluation and student success planning;
  • Provide leadership and consultation to principals, regional and school-based student services support staff on matters relating to special education policies;
  • Assist in the placement of students with special health or accessibility needs;
  • Review new requests for special needs conveyance and determine eligibility;
  • Collaborate with school staff and other program staff to establish expectations for assistive technology needs;
  • Participate in the development of priorities and the implementation of system-wide professional development needs to support student success planning;
  • Provide oversight to student services specialist teams to prioritize referrals, deployment of services and resources;
  • Attend meetings as required and/or represent the Coordinator of Student Services at meetings when necessary;
  • Other duties as assigned by the Coordinator of Students Services and/or Director of Programs and Student Services.
