The Tri-County Regional Centre for Education (TCRCE) encompasses the three (3) Counties of Shelburne, Yarmouth, and Digby serving approximately 6100 students in twenty-two (22) schools, composed of 13 Elementary Schools, 6 High Schools, 1 Middle School, and 2 Elementary/High Schools.

Position:               Autism Behavior Analyst (ABA) Specialist

It is the role of the ABA Specialist to collaborate with school-based and regional staff supporting the implementation of the Inclusive Education Policy throughout the system. All aspects of the Program Planning Process including gifted and talented education, transition planning, adaptations, individual program planning, and documentation of the process are included in the scope of responsibilities. The ABA Specialist works within an inclusive framework to support the work of Student Planning Teams, classroom teachers, learning support teachers, and teacher assistants. Working collaboratively with a team of educational professionals, the ABA specialist supports all aspects of student learning and well-being. 

 

The ABC Specialist provides support to students with significant learning and behavioral challenges or who demonstrate complex needs including but not exclusive to students with autism spectrum disorder within the region.  They provide support to school teams and staff in the design and implementation of behavior outcomes and specific teaching strategies to support student learning. The ABA Specialist works within the Inclusion Policy and MTSS framework by participating in individualized program planning with school staff and families to maximize learning experiences for students within the school setting.

 

Qualifications

  • BCBA Certification in good standing with the Behavior Analyst Certification Board OR completion of a Master level program in Applied Behavioral Analysis, and currently undergoing supervision to obtain BCBA certification;
  • A Master Degree or equivalent in Education, Speech Language Pathology or Psychology;
  • Eligible for Nova Scotia Teaching Certification.

 

Experience

  • Minimum five (5) years’ experience working in a school setting with children and youth diagnosed with ASD and/or complex behavior challenges;
  • Experience and demonstrated competence in providing professional development for school-based and regional staff;
  • Familiarity with traditional and contemporary ABA approaches including Verbal Behaviour, PRT and other naturalistic behavioural interventions;
  • Has taken ASD online course ASD and Behavioral Interventions: An Introduction for School Personnel.

Accountabilities

  • Design, develop and implement behavior management and/or behavioral interventions and programs for skills development.
  • Commitment to using evidence-based practices for school aged children and youth.
  • Conduct Functional Behavior Assessments to develop behavior intervention plans.
  • Maintain graphing and progress reports for students on caseload.
  • Participate in the student program planning process providing support for the implementation of student plans.
  • Work respectfully and collaboratively with administration, classroom teachers, learning support teachers, and specialist staff (i.e., SLPs, ASD Specialists/Autism Support Teachers, School Psychologists, Consultants).
  • Provide on-going coaching and professional learning opportunities to school staff on behavior interventions and supports, learning and teaching strategies.
  • Consult with regular classroom teachers, learning support teachers and other school staff regarding students with complex learning and behavioral challenges.
  • Assist with maintaining student data and prepare pertinent reports to document student progress as requested by the school team and Student Services Consultant.
  • Assist with developing and providing staff training and preparation for working effectively with students with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder as well as those students with other behavioral disorders.
  • Commitment to maintaining BCBA certification.
  • Carry out other responsibilities as designated by the Student Services Coordinator.
