The Tri-County Regional Centre for Education (TCRCE) encompasses the three (3) Counties of Shelburne, Yarmouth, and Digby serving approximately 6100 students in twenty-two (22) schools, composed of 13 Elementary Schools, 6 High Schools, 1 Middle School, and 2 Elementary/High Schools.

      Position:               Food Service Lead

 

                                Reports to:           Program Lead, School Food

    

The Food Service Lead (FSL), under the direction of the School Lunch Program Lead and the school administrator, will demonstrate strong organizational and planning skills. They are responsible for food preparation, serving food to students, staff, and guests, performing cashier duties (when required), serving customers swiftly, efficiently, and with dignity. They must adhere to all food safety standards, the Food and Nutrition Policy for Nova Scotia Public Schools and standardized menus.

The FSL performs optimally in a dynamic, high-pressure, fast-paced environment. They will have daily interactions with individuals from various backgrounds, maintaining a friendly and positive attitude while ensuring confidentiality. The FSL will be committed to creating a healthy food environment by promoting healthy eating, food equity, and a safe and welcoming space. Consistent attendance in current and previous positions is expected.

 

Qualifications

  • Culinary course preferred;
  • One (1) year experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified, including quantity cooking; 
  • Completion of a recognized food safety training program or willing to complete within 6 months;
  • Proven experience in inventory management, preferably in a food service or educational setting;
  • Demonstrate strong people skills, in particular, being responsive to the diverse backgrounds and personalities of students of various ages while in a busy, fast paced environment;
  • Physically able to perform duties of the position including heavy lifting (may require lifting of up to 50 lb), walking and standing during most of the day, and working in an environment with heat fluctuations;
  • Proficient in technology skills relevant to the position;

Accountabilities

      Food Preparation 

  • Ability to prepare food for breakfast, recess, lunch, catering, and other school food programs as required;
  • Prepare a sufficient quantity of meals daily, based on the number of orders received through an online ordering system;
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and complex recipes;
  • Assign food preparation and cooking duties amongst food service staff;
  • Ensure appropriate portions are served;

 

Kitchen Management 

  • Oversee the ordering and receipt of food products and maintain records;
  • Inspect food deliveries, ensuring all items meet established quality and freshness standards;
  • Manage inventory with accurate record-keeping and timely reporting;
  • Conduct regular audits to assess stock levels and prevent shortages or overstocking, and ensure the kitchen and cafeteria are well-supplied;
  • Ability to control and track food waste;

 

Safety and Sanitation 

  • Follow food safety and sanitation guidelines. Utilize safe food handling practices to ensure allergen risk management;
  • Clean, organize and sanitize work areas, equipment, utensils, and floors;

 

Other Duties 

  • Serve customers in a fast, efficient and friendly manner;
  • Perform cashier duties and take orders as required;
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned by the school administrator and/or School Lunch Program Lead;
  • Promote and maintain positive working relationships and communication; 
  • Assist with school events that require food preparation and distribution as required;
  • Attend and participate in Food Service Development days that may be held during in-service days or occasionally outside regular working hours;
  • Seek feedback from students regarding meal satisfaction.

 

This is a  Non Union position. The salary for this role is Band 3 as outlined within the terms and conditions of employment in accordance with the Education Entities Non-Union Compensation Framework. For additional details, the framework can be found on the TCRCE HR website Click Here

Band 3 = $24.68 - $30.85 - based on qualifications and experience.
