School Safety Lead – Cobequid Educational Centre

Location: Truro, Nova Scotia

 

The Chignecto-Central Regional Centre for Education is seeking a School Safety Lead for Cobequid Educational Centre in Truro, NS. Cobequid Educational Centre if a large senior high school of approximately 1400 students in grades 9-12.

 

Reporting to the Principal and working in a dynamic, high-pressure and fast-paced environment, the School Safety Lead supports school staff in maintaining a safe and secure school environment. The School Safety Lead is present throughout the building and exterior of the school to support the prevention of inappropriate student behaviour, including violence. The School Safety Lead is primarily responsible to identify and intervene in student safety concerns while maintaining a high level of security within the school environment by monitoring incoming and outgoing traffic.

 

Main Responsibilities include:

  • Monitor all incoming and outgoing traffic in the building and on school property; 
  • Utilize available technology/security devices; 
  • Maintain necessary records relating to security and safety concerns; 
  • Monitor the actions of students for possible safety concerns; 
  • Assist the school administration in the gathering of accurate information regarding discipline concerns; 
  • Intervene proactively to advise students on how to deal with conflict in non-violent ways; 
  • Monitor students during exit/entry procedures to ensure students are acting in a safe and respectful manner; 
  • Monitor high traffic areas during the school day, redirecting students to appropriate locations when necessary. (cafeteria, hallways, etc.); 
  • Work cooperatively with the administration regarding matters of safety and make recommendations with respect to improving school safety procedures; 
  • Serve as a positive liaison between school and community; 
  • Attend staff meetings when required on matters of safety and security; 
  • Investigate suspicious/illegal activities on school property and make referrals to the school administration.

 

REQUIREMENTS

  • High School Diploma or equivalent;
  • Current First Aid training;
  • Experience working with children and youth;
  • Training/experience with de-escalation strategies;
  • Physical abilities consistent with the requirements of the position
  • Strong conflict resolution skills;
  • Strong collaboration and problem-solving skills;
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to effectively communicate with a variety of stakeholders, including students, staff, parents, and community members.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, team environment;
  • Ability to work independently; 
  • Ability to implement pro-active supportive strategies for youth;
  • Ability to maintain and promote confidentiality;
  • Understanding of and commitment to restorative approaches
  • Understanding of and commitment to culturally responsive practices

 

ADDITIONAL ASSETS

  • Degree or diploma in Human/Social Services
  • Knowledge of security systems
