The Cape Breton-Victoria Regional Centre for Education is responsible for the administration of the public school system within the boundaries of Cape Breton and Victoria Counties, supporting approximately 12,000 students in 38 schools.

Position: Head Cafeteria Worker

  2. Head Cafeteria Worker - Glace Bay High School
  3. Head Cafeteria Worker - Memorial High School
  4. Head Cafeteria Worker - Sydney Academy

 

Salary: $22.66/hour

Hours of Work: 7 hours daily (Please note these positions work September to June annually subject to normal school layoff periods and days when students are not present)

  • MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS 

    • Completion of a culinary course or food service management course, and  

    • A minimum of one (1) year experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified, including quantity cooking and food service management, preferably in a school cafeteria setting. 

    • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. 

    • Completion of a recognized Food Safety training program 

    • Familiarity with the School Food and Nutrition Policy 

    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills 

    • Ability to work effectively in a dynamic, fast-paced environment 

    • Commitment to food equity and healthy eating 

    • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment  

    • Demonstrated ability to be interpersonally responsive to the diverse backgrounds and personalities of students of various ages, and to maintain confidentiality in all issues related to students, families and school 

    • Physically able to perform duties of the position including heavy lifting (may require lifting of up to 50 lbs), walking and standing during most of the day, and working in an environment with heat fluctuations;

JOB SCOPE:  

The Head Cafeteria Worker, under the direction of the School Principal, oversees daily operations, as well as food preparation and service of the school lunch program and other school food programs as required. Working in a dynamic, fast-paced environment, the Head Cafeteria Worker upholds the values of the School Food and Nutrition Policy and the Inclusive Education policy and is committed to promoting equity, helping create healthy school food environments, and interacting with students in a way that is friendly, positive and maintains trust and confidentiality 

 

Key Responsibilities  

Oversee Cafeteria Operations  

  • Procuring and invoicing for food supplies  

  • Maintaining daily service in the cafeteria through scheduling and responding to basic human resources needs  

  • Addressing day-to-day issues that may arise in collaboration with the Principal and the Program Lead, School Food.  

  • Evaluate work processes to ensure efficient utilization or resources and quality services  

  • Along with the school Principal, collaborate with Cafeteria Workers to provide leadership, direction and clarify job functions  

 

Ensure adherence to lunch menus  

  • Ensure cost efficiency   

  • Ensure menus are nutritional in consultation with the Program Lead, School Food   

 

Prepare and serve food for the school lunch program and other school food programs as required 

  • Follow food safety standards and school allergy plans  

  • Service customers in a friendly and efficient manner  

 

Perform Kitchen Responsibilities  

  • Washing dishes 

  • Collecting and removing compost, recyclables and garbage 

  • Clean and organize work areas, equipment, utensils, service stations and floors 

  • Restocking supplies for the kitchen and cafeteria

Other related duties as assigned
