The Cape Breton-Victoria Regional Centre for Education is responsible for the administration of the public school system within the boundaries of Cape Breton and Victoria Counties, supporting approximately 12,000 students in 38 schools.

Position: Cafeteria Worker 

 

Available Locations: Riverview High School, Glace Bay High School, Memorial High School, Sydney Academy

 

Hours: Vary by position. See position descriptions below. Please note these positions work September to June annually subject to normal school layoff periods and days when students are not present)

 

Salary: $20.60/hour

 

 

Available Positions:

  1. Riverview High School - 3 Positions (7 hours daily - 1 position, 5 hours daily - 2 positions)
  2. Glace Bay High School - 3 Positions (6 hours daily, 5 hours daily, 3 hours daily)
  3. Memorial High School - 3 positions (6 hours daily, 5 hours daily, 3 hours daily)
  4. Sydney Academy - 3 positions (6 hours daily, 5 hours daily, 4 hours daily)

Minimum Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma, GED, or suitable equivalent. 

  • Completion of a culinary course or food service management course would be an asset 

  • A minimum of one (1) year experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified, including quantity cooking, preferably in a school cafeteria setting. 

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. 

  • Completion of a recognized Food Safety training program 

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills 

  • Ability to work effectively in a dynamic, fast-paced environment 

  • Commitment to food equity and healthy eating 

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment  

  • Demonstrated ability to be interpersonally responsive to the diverse backgrounds and personalities of students of various ages, and to maintain confidentiality in all issues related to students, families and school 

  • Physically able to perform duties of the position including heavy lifting (may require lifting of up to 50 lbs), walking and standing during most of the day, and working in an environment with heat fluctuations;

JOB SCOPE:  

The Cafeteria Worker, under the direction of the School Principal and working cooperatively with the Head Cafeteria Worker, is responsible for food preparation and service for the school lunch program and other school food programs as required. Working in a dynamic, fast-paced environment, the Cafeteria Worker upholds the values of the School Food and Nutrition Policy and the Inclusive Education policy and is committed to promoting equity, helping create healthy school food environments, and interacting with students in a way that is friendly, positive and maintains trust and confidentiality.

 

Key Responsibilities  

Prepare and serve food for the school lunch program and other school food programs as required  

  • Follow food safety standards and school allergy plans  

  • Service customers in a friendly and efficient manner  

 

Perform Kitchen Responsibilities  

  • Washing dishes 

  • Collecting and removing compost, recyclables and garbage 

  • Clean and organize work areas, equipment, utensils, service stations and floors 

  • Restocking supplies for the kitchen and cafeteria 

 

Other related duties as assigned
