The Cape Breton-Victoria Regional Centre for Education is responsible for the administration of the public school system within the boundaries of Cape Breton and Victoria Counties, supporting approximately 12,000 students in 38 schools.

AVAILABLE POSITIONS:
1. Two Positions - Summer Literacy Camp Counselors - Harbourside Elementary School, Sydney
HOURS OF WORK: Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 4:00 pm (Candidates must be willing to work a flexible work schedule as required)
WORK TERM: Seasonal summer position - July 7th, 2025 to August 15th, 2025
RATE OF PAY: $18.00/hr
MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS IN EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- At least one season/summer of experience working or volunteering with children in a recreational setting or equivalent experience (such as working with children in a school setting)
- Knowledge and understanding of Healthy Child Development (relevant post-secondary coursework is preferred)
- Previous experience working with persons with disabilities would be considered an asset
Technical / Job Specific Knowledge, Abilities and Training
Current certification in Emergency First Aid and Level C CPR (can be provided)
Screening through the Child Abuse Registry and a Police Records Check

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Summer Literacy Day Camp Counselor facilitates recreation programs for participants in lower elementary grades and reports to the Camp Leader. The counselor assists the camp leader in designing and implementing recreation activities within a planned curriculum. Supports for persons with disabilities in programs may be required to develop a specific program plan.
Other responsibilities include: daily duties such as greeting parents and participants, supporting activities, ensuring the safety and enjoyment of participants, organizing equipment and supplies, preparing for activities, assisting in the distribution and collecting permission slips for outings, assisting in organizing outings and special events, participating in staff meetings, assisting and supporting the instructor during literacy instruction.
Specific recreation training will be required prior to the start date of the camp and is mandatory. Other training will also be provided as part of employment.
