The Cape Breton-Victoria Regional Centre for Education is responsible for the administration of the public school system within the boundaries of Cape Breton and Victoria Counties, supporting approximately 12,000 students in 38 schools.

Qualifications and Competencies Required

  • Valid Nova Scotia Teacher’s License with a minimum of five (5) years recent (within the last 7 years) successful teaching experience in mathematics.
  • Undergraduate Degree with a Major/Minor in Mathematics or the St. Mary’s University Certificate in Mathematical Sciences for Education.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of mathematics curriculum from Primary to 12.
  • Experience and training in the planning, organization and delivery of professional development opportunities related to mathematics P-12.
  • Leadership experience with mathematics initiatives at the classroom, school, regional, and/or provincial level(s).
  • Excellent leadership, team-building, communication (written, oral and electronic) and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership to ensure equity and access of mathematics curriculum, instruction and learning activities for all students.
  • Continue to support the implementation of the Mathematics Strategy P-12.
  • Support mathematics coaching and intervention within schools.
  • Assist teachers of mathematics, grades P-12, in planning, organizing and delivering a coherent mathematics program focused on the requirements of the prescribed curriculum.
  • Prepare and facilitate professional learning opportunities for mathematics team members, mathematics teachers, learning support teachers, and school administrators focusing on the alignment of assessment tasks with curriculum outcomes and instructional practice.
  • Support schools with developing and attaining their mathematics goals for school improvement planning through the collection and analysis of data.
  • Continue to develop strategies to provide Regional level monitoring and support for the mathematics program.
  • Assist in the developing of a strategy to support provincial recommendations for instructional time for Mathematics P-12.
  • Support the integration of mathematics into initiatives such as STEAM Week, Regional and National Science Fair, and innovation-based learning events.
  • Participate in Provincial Mathematics Lead Team meetings.
  • Promote student involvement in mathematics competitions and invite parents to participate in mathematics workshops so that they can better support their student’s learning in mathematics.
  • Maintain the CBVRCE Mathematics resources - including Google Classroom materials and CBVRCE Mathematics website.

Other duties as assigned by the Coordinator of Mathematics and Technology and the Director of Programs and Student Services.
