The Cape Breton-Victoria Regional Centre for Education is responsible for the administration of the public school system within the boundaries of Cape Breton and Victoria Counties, supporting approximately 12,000 students in 38 schools.

QUALIFICATIONS and COMPETENCIES

  • A valid Nova Scotia Teaching Certificate
  • A minimum five (5) years recent (in the past 7), successful classroom teaching experience in literacy instruction at grades 9 -12.
  • Leadership experience with literacy initiatives at the classroom, school, Region, and/or provincial level(s).  Please provide examples.
  • Excellent leadership, team-building, communication (written, oral and electronic) and interpersonal skills. Please provide examples.
  • Experience and willingness to work closely with Student Services and other regional teams

Experience with Self-Regulated Strategy Development (SRSD) is preferred

High School Literacy Coach (9-12)

Overall Scope

The Literacy /Coach will be responsible to work with classroom teachers and students in small groups. The successful candidate will have a comprehensive understanding of Nova Scotia curriculum and the high-level literacy practices associated with strong classroom practice. Modelling of these practices by the coach is an essential skill for this position. The candidate will be expected to have strong communication skills. As we move forward with 21st century learning it is an expectation that this position will be built around using student evidence to inform classroom planning. A candidate with experience scoring Provincial Assessments would be an asset.

 

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND UNDERSTANDINGS

Successful Coaching and or mentoring requires that the Coach have deep understanding, knowledge, and skills in a number of key areas.

 

These include:

  • the current English Language Arts curriculum
  • authentic, balanced assessment strategies
  • effective instructional strategies based on current research
  • knowledge of how students learn to read and write across all subjects
  • strong interpersonal skills
  • strong oral and written communication skills
  • strong planning and organizational skills
  • strategies for developing and maintaining positive relationships built on trust, and collaboration to enhance planning, problem solving, risk taking, and decision making
  • strategies for supporting teachers to become self-monitoring practitioners and self-extending learners
  • time management strategies to gain the maximum benefits from the Coaching practice
  • strategies to interpret and respond to the changing contexts they experience from school to school, from teacher to teacher, and from one time to another
  • awareness of and participation in a range of professional learning opportunities
  • analyze problems and formulate recommendations that result in improved teacher practice and student achievement
  • positive perspective on change and support others in the change process
  • strategies for monitoring, assessing, evaluating, and reporting on progress and success of coaching
  • use of technology and the ability to integrate digital learning environments within the classroom
  • use of data to improve instruction and student achievement
  • other duties as assigned by the Coordinator of Literacy
