The Cape Breton-Victoria Regional Centre for Education is responsible for the administration of the public school system within the boundaries of Cape Breton and Victoria Counties, supporting approximately 12,000 students in 38 schools.

AVAILABLE POSITIONS:

1. African Canadian Student Support Worker - Memorial High School (Base) serving Northside/Victoria South/Victoria North Family of Schools (circuit position with travel required)

 

HOURS OF WORK:  Monday to Friday, 6.5 hours daily (flexible schedule including some evening and weekend hours may be required)

WORK TERM:   Permanent regular positions (working 10 months per year)

RATE OF PAY:  $30.02 per hour 

 

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A minimum of 2-years post-secondary education in a related program (diploma/degree program in education, social services, psychology, social work, criminal justice, African Studies, or equivalent) 

    • An equivalent combination of related education/training and related experience may be considered in lieu of a diploma/degree program 

  • Candidates for African Canadian Student Support Worker positions must be a person of African descent;
  • Knowledge of and experience working with children and youth, particularly “at-risk” students in African Canadian is required;
  • Experience in community-based work, particularly in relation to African Canadian or communities/populations is required
  • Demonstrated ability in working collaboratively as part of a team involving students, teachers, parents/guardians;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Demonstrated ability in assisting children and youth in reaching their potential;
  • The ability to work independently;
  • Candidates must have a vehicle and a valid Nova Scotia driver’s license;
  • Candidates must be willing to work a flexible schedule, which includes some evening and weekend hours.

 

POSITION SCOPE:

The Student Support Worker - African Canadian and/or Indigenous will be available for students who are racially, culturally and socially “at risk”. Their primary role will be to monitor and provide support to these students and their families, as well as be the liaison between the school and the African Nova Scotian or Mi'kmaq community.  The overall objective will be to help these students achieve positive educational experiences, experience success and remain in school. The Student Support Worker reports to the Principal and either the Coordinator of African Canadian Education/Services or the Coordinator of Mi'kmaq Education Services who will organize regular meetings and coordinate ongoing professional development for the Student Support Worker.

 

JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Become familiar with students' needs, and in cooperation with staff, establish a method for monitoring progress and relaying appropriate information home;
  • Monitor students' attendance;
  • Assist students to access supports within their local community;
  • Maintain ongoing journals for all students;
  • Promote increased contact between the students, parents, and teachers;
  • In co-operation with guidance counselor, students and parents, discuss options of educational goals and appropriate course selection;
  • Act as an advocate when necessary;
  • Perform other duties/activities as deemed appropriate by the Principal, in consultation with the Co-ordinator of African Canadian Education/Services and/or the Coordinator of Mi'kmaq Education Services
  • Participation in Parent Teacher Conference days; 
  • Other related duties as assigned.
