The Cape Breton-Victoria Regional Centre for Education is responsible for the administration of the public school system within the boundaries of Cape Breton and Victoria Counties, supporting approximately 12,000 students in 38 schools.

AVAILABLE POSITIONS:  Head Custodian - Baddeck Academy

 

HOURS OF WORK: Monday to Friday, 8 hours/daily

WORK TERM:  Permanent regular position (working 12 months per year)

RATE OF PAY:  $22.78/hr

 

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

1.  Experience of at least six (6) years in building maintenance systems 

2. Have a good record of attendance

3. Ability to work with others

4. Be able to supervise staff where necessary

5. Be available to work split shifts as required

6. Willingness to undertake further training as required.

7. A valid Nova Scotia driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle

 

 

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Oversee the janitorial staff on day-to-day cleaning and general maintenance of the school building(s) and grounds in accordance with established practices;
  2. Clean, on a daily or as scheduled basis, all assigned areas of the school in accordance with established practices and standards;
  3. Perform routine inspections and maintenance of building systems and grounds.
  4. Maintain records with respect to systems, condition of the school, equipment and grounds;
  5. Report any breakdowns, accidents, damage or vandalism to the appropriate Supervisor;
  6. Order and maintain adequate cleaning supplies for the school and control the inventory and the use of these supplies with the school;
  7. Secure all doors and windows whenever the building is vacated and activate security system if last person to vacate building;
  8. Perform minor maintenance tasks such as, but not limited to, installing window blinds draperies, maps, replacing light bulbs, touch-up painting, minor repairs to windows, walls, doors, locks, furniture, installing window screens, mowing grass, etc,;
  9. Check for repairs required to infrastructure and report maintenance requirements;
  10. Coordinate physical requirements for school rentals, dances, tournaments, and other activities;
  11. Set-up furnishings as required;
  12. Assist in after-hours emergencies (evenings, weekend, and holiday coverage), and be available for weekend coverage as required by the Centre for Education;
  13. Perform duties in compliance with school, Operations Department, and Centre policies and procedures including occupational health, safety, attendance, work routines, WHMIS and evacuation plans and laws of the Province of Nova Scotia;
  14. Other related duties as assigned.
