The Cape Breton-Victoria Regional Centre for Education is responsible for the administration of the public school system within the boundaries of Cape Breton and Victoria Counties, supporting approximately 12,000 students in 38 schools.

Please note all positions require travel to other schools and/or other families of schools.  A driver's license and daily access to a reliable vehicle are required for these positions.

 

HOURS OF WORK:  Monday to Friday, 7 hours daily

WORK TERM:   Permanent 12-month regular positions (Casual work may also be available.)

RATE OF PAY:  $30.71 per hour (rates under review)


MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS IN EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

 

  • Completion of a two-year Child & Youth Care Practitioner Program Diploma is required. The required diploma or certificate includes but is not limited to study and practicums focused on: growth and development, relational child and youth care practices and ethics, child and youth care group facilitation, principles of behavior, developmental psychology concentrating on children and youth, activity-based interventions and observation skills with children and youth, child and youth care relational communication, family systems, and therapeutic activity programming. An equivalent combination of training and experience which includes, at a minimum, a 2-year diploma/degree with equivalent course work and practicum experiences within a child and youth services setting, together with additional work experience specifically related to the required competencies, may be considered.
  • Minimum of two years’ experience working with school-aged children and youth in positions that demonstrate the required competencies is required
  • Experience working with children and youth in an educational setting is preferred.
  • Applicants with a Teacher Assistant Diploma from an approved post-secondary institution, together with additional related training and a minimum of five years' experience as a Teacher Assistant may be considered.  Applicants should detail all related training courses and experience in an attached resume in order to be considered.
  • Membership in the NS Child and Youth Care Workers’ Association is an asset.
  • Direct knowledge and experience of the community served is an asset.
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle.
  • First Aid and CPR
  • Nonviolent crisis intervention.

 

Required Competencies

  • The ability to establish proactive relationships with and provide appropriate interventions for vulnerable children and youth impacted by developmental trauma and/or behaviour, social and mental health challenges.
  • The ability to apply evidence-informed interventions related to social-emotional learning and culturally responsive pedagogy.
  • The ability to apply knowledge of early childhood development as it relates to academic and social success through a multi-tiered support system (MTSS).
  • The ability to collaboratively program plan to support academic and social success for students.
  • The ability to apply effective mediation and conflict resolution strategies.
  • The ability to work effectively in flexible work situations; i.e. visit homes when required to provide the link between the school and the home to support student success.
  • The ability to utilize current technologies to support students experiencing self-regulation and communication challenges.
  • The ability to work & communicate effectively with students.
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal communication skills.
  • The desire and ability to engage in continuing education and professional development.
  • The ability to maintain and promote confidentiality as the norm.
  • The ability to work collaboratively with teachers, teacher assistants, administrators, specialists and others to support the implementation of appropriate interventions and programming for assigned students.
  • Provide support to teacher assistants who work with students with identified needs.
  • The ability to use approaches such as functional analysis of behavior.
  • Coordinate and contribute to the effective implementation of strategies and good practices, such as a positive reinforcement system, visual schedule, movement breaks, etc.
  • Contribute to building a healthy and safe school environment by supporting positive behaviors
  • Maintain progressive files and notes for identified students.
  • The ability to complete other duties as required.

 

 

Position Description

Working under the direction of the School Principal and/or the Schools Plus Facilitator/Coordinator of Student Services, within a needs based and inclusive approach, the Child and Youth Care Practitioner (CYCP) works with assigned students in schools and is responsible for collaborating with school teams to help design and carry out proactive, evidence based programming for students who have social, emotional and behavior issues. This may include:

 

•  working with students directly in education settings, identifying services for students who have difficulty coping in school/education settings

•  Engaging in, and supporting effective connections and communications between the school, the families and other appropriate community agencies to meet student needs.

•  Working collaboratively with families, administrators, classroom teachers, teacher assistants, SchoolsPlus, specialist staff, community based agencies, programs, services and supports.

•   Assisting students to develop social skills and self-regulation through community based, recreation, summer and after school programs.
