The Strait Regional (0052) invites applications from qualified candidates for the posted vacancy.  As part of the public education system in Nova Scotia, the Strait Regional Centre for Education (SRCE) was established on April 1, 2018, to deliver the public school program focusing on supporting student learning, achievement, well-being and overall success.  The Strait Regional Centre for Education, with the support of approximately 1,050 employees, works diligently to achieve its mission “to empower our children and youth, within safe, equitable and inclusive environments to embrace a changing world as responsible, contributing and successful lifelong learners.”  In 2022-2023, the SRCE operates 20 schools with approximately 5,931 students; and approximately 369 children are attending pre-primary programs at 14 school locations.  Located in the northeastern part of Nova Scotia, the Strait Regional Centre for Education’s jurisdiction encompasses the counties of Antigonish, Guysborough, Inverness and Richmond, an area of approximately 11,000 square kilometres with a population of 53,742 (Census 2021).

 

Work Schedule: 5.5 hours/day

ROLE:   The Student Support Worker will be available for students who are racially, culturally and socially at risk. Their primary role will be to monitor and provide support to these students and their families, as well as being the liaison between the school and the First Nation community.
The overall objective will be to help these students achieve positive educational experiences, experience success and remain in school.
Responsibilities:
Become familiar with students' needs, and in cooperation with staff, establish a method for monitoring progress and relaying appropriate information home;
Establish, as necessary, personal contact with parents by phone or through visits to the home;
Monitor students attendance; Assist students to access supports within their local community;
Maintain on-going journals for all students;
Promote increased contact between the students, parents and teachers; In co-operation with guidance counselor, students and parents, discuss options of educational goals and appropriate course selection;
Act as an advocate when necessary;
Perform other duties/activities as deemed appropriate by the Principal, in consultation with the Coordinator of Mi'kmaw Services;
Participation in Parent Teacher Conference days;
Other related duties as assigned.  

 

Essential Qualifications:
Grade 12 Academic, plus appropriate post secondary education;

Knowledge of educational issues as they relate to student learners;
Excellent time management, organizational and interpersonal skills;
Ability to work with students to support their learning in various curriculum settings;
Completion of a current certification of CPR/First Aid or willing to obtain prior to employment.

 

Desirable Qualifications:

Experience in the use of technology (i.e. - word processing, internet, email, etc.).;

Current certification in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention;.

Proficient in Mi'kmaw language;

First Nations Descent.
