Qualifications:
- Degree or Diploma in Disability Supports and Services, or acceptable equivalent;
- Experience working in school settings with children and youth is required;
- In-depth knowledge of use and creation of systems/structures;
- Access to reliable transportation on a daily basis;
- Additional training in the following would be considered an asset:
- TEACCH (including in depth knowledge of use and creation of systems/structures);
- STAR (Strategies for Teaching based on Autism Research);
- Social Narratives;
- Social Thinking, Zones of Regulation; Interoception;
- APSEA AIE ASD Online Course: ASD and Behavioral Interventions: An Introduction for School Personnel;
- Trauma Informed Understanding of the MTSS Framework and supporting the Tiers of Intervention.
Task Dimensions:
Key areas of this position include supporting students with autism through transitions from pre-primary to primary, grade to grade, school to school, and school to community living; and providing on-site consultation and observation to identify student strengths, barriers, and needs, and collaboratively develop systems, structures, and practices that promote access, engagement, independence, and successful transitions across Tiers 1, 2, and 3.
- Supporting the mobilization of resources to facilitate student transitions into school, from grade to grade, school to school, and from school to community;
- Collaborating with school teams and families as a member of the Student Planning Team to support effective transition planning and implementation;
- Communicating and collaborating with school staff, students, parents/guardians, and community agencies;
- Supporting the development and implementation of appropriate systems and structures to promote predictability, independence, engagement, and successful participation;
- Assisting teaching staff in developing and implementing structured teaching materials and supports, such as visual schedules, choice wheels, bin systems, and other individualized organizational systems;
- Providing training, consultation, modeling, and coaching to school teams, under the direction of the Consultant for Autism, Complex Cases & Learning Centres and/or Coordinator of Student Services;
- Modeling and coaching TAs in the implementation of systems, structures, and strategies that support student engagement, behaviour, independence, and academic achievement;
- Is a core member of the regional Autism Team;
- Complies with the Occupational Health and Safety;
-Performs other related duties as required.
