Introduction The Chignecto Central Regional Centre for Education invites applications from Permanent, Probationary and Temporary (Casual) employees currently with Chignecto Central Regional Centre for Education as well as outside applicants for the following General Maintenance. This is a Full time Regional position serving the Nova Family of schools, based in Central Office (Truro).
 
Minimum Requirements o Minimum of Grade 12 High School Diploma or academic equivalent through educational programs such as a Graduated Equivalent Diploma. Additional education, including trades training, is an asset.
o Minimum of three (3) years work experience in construction or maintenance fields.
o Valid Nova Scotia driver´s license and be willing to drive extensively throughout the applicable Family of Schools.
o Physically able to perform the duties required including significant periods of walking, extended periods of standing, sitting, involves heavy lifting (up to 50 lbs.), and repetitive push/pull motion.
o Experience working in an educational setting.
o Experience in PC application of word processing and spreadsheets an asset.
o Exposure to computer maintenance systems such as SAP is an asset.
o Typical working hours are 7:00 am - 3:30 pm, weekdays.
 
Additional Assets osition Summary

The General Maintenance Position shall provide support to the CCRCE Property Services Program. The incumbent shall work in partnership with other staff and supervisors in a collaborative environment.

Competencies Required

The General Maintenance position in the Property Services Division of the Operational Services Dept. of the Chignecto Central Regional Centre for Education shall have the following competencies:
(a) A general knowledge of work in numerous trades, i.e. carpentry, ventilation, plumbing, etc., as well as building construction including the building envelope, structure, mechanical, electrical, safety and utility systems.
(b) Ability to work as a contributing team member and is adaptable to frequently changing priorities.
(c) Ability to maintain a professional standard and commitment when meeting operational requirements that can have tight timeframes.
(d) Possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both written and verbal).
(e) A working knowledge of applicable building codes and regulatory requirements including Fire Codes and the Provincial Fire Safety Program.
(f) The knowledge and ability to engage in continuing education and skills upgrading, as necessary.
(g) A demonstrated competency in administrative and organizational tasks including competency in the operation of a personal computer.
(h) Ability to take initiative in recognizing, prioritizing, and scheduling of work.
(i) The ability to work collaboratively with staff members in all departments and functions.
(j) Ability and willingness to perform skilled and semi-skilled tasks and labour in various trades.
(k) Willingness to accept training and participate in the CCRCE´s Water Quality Control program.
(l) Willingness to complete courses in WHMIS, First Aid, Fall Protection and Confined Space.
(m) Willingness to provide a Criminal Records Check and complete a Child Abuse Registry form.
(n) Capable of working as a member of a team or individually working efficiently with minimal supervision


Specific Job Components

The General Maintainer shall support the Property Services initiatives in the Chignecto Central Regional Centre for Education´s facilities and activities. Those tasks may vary from time to time and may include the following:
(a) Maintain appropriate records and documentation related to Workplace Inspections.
(b) Ability to contribute to the implementation of Property Services policies and procedures within CCRCE, as appropriate.
(c) Maintain knowledge of CCRCE and department-specific policies and procedures and follow same.
(d) Providing assistance during the winter months with snow removal and salting of walkways.
(e) Providing assistance during the summer months with lawn mowing and plant care.
(f) Maintaining school grounds and conducting daily inspection of school grounds to remove trash and unsafe objects.
(g) Move furniture or equipment within buildings or between buildings, as required for various activities, as directed by supervisor.
(h) Perform semi-skilled to skilled maintenance, repair and construction work in the basic trades such as carpentry, plumbing and heating, painting, minor electrical, glazing, roofing and locksmithing, as required.
(i) Perform preventative maintenance tasks on installed equipment and mechanical systems.
(j) Maintain accurate records of work performance through use of approved work order system. Prepare all required reports and maintain all appropriate records.
(k) Instruct users in the proper application and care of any installed components.
(l) Demonstrate initiative in the performance of assigned responsibilities.
(m) Observe and implement proper safety practices for a safe and secure workplace.
(n) Perform general clean-up of job site.
(o) Maintain confidentiality regarding student, school and CCRCE matters.
(p) Participate in workshops and training sessions, as required.
(q) Performing such other duties as requested or assigned by Supervisor.
Work Environment
o Unionized position working under the CCRCE/CUPE collective agreement.
o Extensive travel required, within the applicable Family of Schools and based from the applicable Family Office.
o Potential to work with chemicals in an operations setting.
o Flexible working hours/schedule with varying days of work and duration, i.e. 80 hours bi-weekly, including evenings and weekends, in accordance with operational requirements of position, as determined by supervisor. Typical working hours are 7:00am - 3:30pm, weekdays.
