The Tri-County Regional Centre for Education encompasses the three counties of Shelburne, Yarmouth, and Digby serving 5757 students in twenty-two (22) schools, composed of 13 Elementary Schools, 6 High Schools, 1 Middle School, and 2 Elementary/High Schools.

Title:                        Burner Technician (Tradesperson) – Oil Heat Systems Technician

 

Responsible to:     Coordinator of Property Services

 

Role: To perform journey level trades work to construct, maintain, repair, and build commercial boiler systems and components. Acts in a leadership capacity through the development, installation, maintenance, and repair of projects.

Qualifications:

 

  • Journeyman’s certificate in Oil Heat Systems
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other trades, custodial staff and school administrations
  • Proven ability to communicate and work alongside diverse cultural and racial backgrounds
  • Demonstrated ability to value the voice and contribution of others while remaining open to corrective criticism
  • Completion of WHMIS and First Aid, or willingness to obtain upon hire
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
  • Demonstrated ability to organize time and resources

 

Responsibilities:

 

  • Service, build, repair, maintain and install hydronic systems and steam heating systems including but not limited to boilers, burners, pumps, fuel system and radiation system, in Commercial applications;

 

  • Assist in the planning and coordination of building capital improvements projects. Determine material quantities and potential work time for proposed upgrades, installations, repairs and projects to ensure accurate estimating of cost and schedule;

 

  • Perform semi-skilled work and labour associated with other trades as required;

 

  • Ensure all work is completed according to standard practices, design specifications, national, provincial and local building codes, other applicable standards and best practices of the trade;

 

  • Provide emergency response during and after work hours and implement corrective action for urgent building problems;

 

  • Maintain appropriate records including updating equipment repair history, work orders, daily job card, vehicle records, test reports and other related data;

 

  • Work with suppliers to ensure correct and sufficient delivery of materials. Initiate ordering of supplies and replacement parts, including properly stocking vehicle and regular recording of vehicle inventory;

 

  • Ensure job related tools and equipment are well maintained;

 

  • Liaise with consultants, contractors, inspectors, suppliers and other departments on maintenance and project work;

 

  • Complete and document work orders including time spent and materials used, and submit in a timely manner to operations department;

 

  • Provide written reports on any inspection and/or tests and make recommendations to improve performance;

 

  • Ensure duties are performed in a fiscally responsible manner;

 

  • Evaluate status of buildings and facilities as assigned and provide written reports;

 

  • Train and evaluate apprentices and other assigned staff; review progress and coach as needed;

 

  • Perform duties in compliance with school, Operations Department, and TCRCE policies and procedures. These policies and procedures include occupational health & safety, attendance, work routines, WHMIS and evacuation plans and the applicable laws of the Province of Nova Scotia;

 

  • Other related duties as assigned.
