Position:                     French Immersion Social Emotional Learning Mentor (Part time 0.3)

 

Reports to:                 Coordinator of French Second Language Programs

The French Immersion SEL Mentor will support French immersion classrooms to develop social emotional learning through modelling integration of health and social emotional learning curriculum outcomes into literacy programming. This position will also support classroom teachers in creating the necessary conditions required for students to engage and connect in a safe and positive way within the classroom environment. 

 

Scope of Responsibilities:

The French Immersion SEL Mentor will work under the direction of the French Second Language Programs Coordinator in consultation with the Coordinator of Student Services.

 

Qualifications:

  • Valid NS Teacher Certification
  • Master’s Degree in Counselling or Curriculum (Literacy)
  • A minimum of 5 years successful classroom experience (P-9)
  • A minimum of 5 years successful counselling or learning support experience
  • Experience in the Social Emotional Development of students with diverse needs and complex behaviours
  • Recent training and experience in evidence based programming and intervention for students, which could be Trauma Informed Practices, STAR, Interoception, Zones of Regulation, PATHs, Mind Up, Universal Design for Learning, and Culturally Responsive Practices
  • Excellent communication in French and English (written, oral, and electronic), problem solving, demonstrated flexibility, creativity, organization, and interpersonal skills
  • Strength in working collaboratively with teams
  • Professional and effective communication and delivery expertise
  • Exceptional ability to foster constructive and collaborative relationships

 

Task Dimensions:

 

  • Apply training and experience to support French Immersion teachers and teaching strategies based on the individual needs of students and of the classroom culture.
  • Modeling literacy practices that integrate social emotional learning through the use of mentor and read aloud texts.
  • Implement and review systems, structures, and routines required for learning in a safe, predictable and engaging environment
  • Supporting Universal Design for Learning
  • Supporting the implementation of evidence-based programming, strategies, and interventions in the area of SEL and positive effective behavioural support systems
  • Modeling exemplary teaching and classroom management strategies and supporting classroom teachers
  • Comply with the Occupational Health & Safety Act and Regulations
  • Possess knowledge of provincial and Regional Education Centre or CSAP policies, guidelines and procedures, and the rights and responsibilities of parents, students, teachers, and schools, as they relate to individuals with special needs
  • Perform other related duties as required
