These positions are for the 2024-2025 school year across the SRCE boundary. 

 

As part of the public education system in Nova Scotia, the Strait Regional Centre for Education (SRCE) was established on April 1, 2018, to deliver the public school program focusing on supporting student learning, achievement, well-being and overall success.  The Strait Regional Centre for Education, with the support of approximately 1,050 employees, works diligently to achieve its mission “to empower our children and youth, within safe, equitable and inclusive environments to embrace a changing world as responsible, contributing and successful lifelong learners.”  In 2023-2024, the SRCE operates 20 schools with approximately 5,954 students; and approximately 369 children are attending pre-primary programs at 14 school locations.  Located in the northeastern part of Nova Scotia, the Strait Regional Centre for Education’s jurisdiction encompasses the counties of Antigonish, Guysborough, Inverness and Richmond, an area of approximately 11,000 square kilometres with a population of 53,742 (Census 2021).

The duties of a Casual Library Technician may include some of the following:

 

Library Technician Responsibilities:

• Maintain circulation system, including borrowing records, re-shelving, overdue notices, etc.;

• Maintain inventory of library materials (shelf list and catalogue, or computerized database where applicable);

• Maintain and post schedule for library use;

• Classify new library materials, and maintain existing collection;

• Catalogue new library materials, and maintain existing library catalogue;

• Organize and maintain vertical files as needed;

• Organize and maintain periodical collection;

• Maintain and circulate audiovisual hardware and software;

• Order, with permission of the principal, the necessary print and non-print materials for the library collection and library supplies required to maintain library operations;

• Perform regular annual inventory of library resources;
• Weed, as required, materials and equipment from the library collection;

• Keep financial records and account for any library funds;

• Promotion of library materials to school staff;

• Provide reference services to staff and students;

• Other related duties as assigned.

 

Essential Qualifications:

Willing to undergo SRCE-directed training for Casual Library Technicians;

Training and/or experience in recordkeeping and filing;

Experience working with children in an educational or community setting;

Excellent time management, organization and interpersonal skills;

Ability to work efficiently with minimum supervision;

Excellent computer skills related to word processing, recordkeeping, resource library software and/or in the use of the internet.

 

Desirable Qualifications:

A recognized course in cataloguing and classification of library material;

Training and/or experience as a Library Technician.
