Food Service Worker Job Description Summary

The Food Service Worker is responsible to oversee food preparation and service in the school cafeteria under the direction of the Regional Program Lead - School Food, Food Service Lead and the South Shore School Food Project.

 

The successful Food Service Worker performs optimally in a dynamic, high-pressure, fast paced environment. The Food Service Worker shows initiative while working and is willing to work within the mission and values of the South Shore School Food Project. They will have the ability to use sound judgement, have problem-solving skills, and a solution-based attitude. The Food Service Worker will have daily interactions with students of various backgrounds. They will be friendly, positive and maintain confidentiality.  The Food Service Worker will be committed to promoting healthy eating, food equity and local, minimally processed foods in the school cafeteria. They will have regular attendance in current and previous positions.

 

Food Service Worker Responsibilities

  1. Participation in food preparation and food service for the school community.
  2. Ensure food safety standards are followed at all times by self and all staff.
  3. Serve customers in fast, efficient and friendly manner.
  4. Promote cafeteria and menu items to staff, students, and parents.
  5. As required: Food preparation and service, cashiering, taking orders, and kitchen duties such as dishes, cleaning, garbage removal.
  6. Ensure a positive, professional work environment. Promote and maintain good working relationships and communication within the school, with other FSWs, the Leads, school staff, students, parents, and the School Food Project in a cooperative manner and a clear exchange of information.
  7. Continually evaluate work processes and use opportunities to improve the quality of service and efficient utilization of resources.
  8. Implement the School Food and Nutrition Policy for Nova Scotia Public Schools in all aspects of the food service.

 

Food Service Worker Requirements

  • High School Diploma, GED, or suitable equivalent.
  • Culinary course and food service experience preferred.
  • Completion of food safety training program.
  • Excellent communication skills including the ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Excellent people skills, in particular be interpersonally responsive to the diverse backgrounds and personalities of students of various ages while in a busy, fast paced environment.
  • Proficient understanding of food allergies.
  • Physical capabilities to perform duties of the position including heavy lifting, walking and standing during most of the day, and working in an environment with heat fluctuations. May require lifting of up to 50 lb.
  • Available to work extended hours.

 

BACKGROUND/SECURITY CHECKS:

The South Shore Regional Centre for Education requires all newly hired employees to provide a satisfactory Criminal Record / Vulnerable Sector Check and a Nova Scotia Child Abuse Register Check. We will accept checks completed within the last 3 months. 

 

Regional Office based positions require travel and candidates may be required to provide a valid driver's license.  Some school based positions also require travel and candidates may be required to provide a valid driver's license.
