As part of the public education system in Nova Scotia, the Strait Regional Centre for Education (SRCE) was established on April 1, 2018, to deliver the public school program focusing on supporting student learning, achievement, well-being and overall success. The Strait Regional Centre for Education, with the support of approximately 1,166 employees, works diligently to achieve its mission “to empower our children and youth, within safe, equitable and inclusive environments to embrace a changing world as responsible, contributing and successful lifelong learners.” In 2025-2026, the SRCE operates 20 schools with approximately 5,948 students; and approximately 375 children are attending pre-primary programs at 14 school locations. Located in the northeastern part of Nova Scotia, the Strait Regional Centre for Education’s jurisdiction encompasses the counties of Antigonish, Guysborough, Inverness and Richmond, an area of approximately 11,000 square kilometres with a population of 53,742 (Census 2021).

Electrician
Role: Performs work up to and including journey level trades work in constructing, maintaining and repairing building electrical systems and components and acts in a leadership role in installation, maintenance, repair and construction projects. Reports to the Manager of Facilities Maintenance.
Responsibilities:
- Builds, repairs, maintains, and installs electrical systems including but not limited to switchboards, transformers, panels, meters, cables, conduits, switches, PA systems, alarm systems in accordance with established practises and standards;
- Assists in the planning and coordination of building or capital improvement projects;
- Determines material quantities and potential work time for proposed upgrades, installations, repairs and projects to ensure accurate estimating of costs and schedules;
- Performs semi-skilled work and labour associated with other trades as required;
- Ensures all work is done according to standard practices, design specifications, national, provincial and local electrical codes, other applicable standards and good practice of the trade;
- Provides emergency response and corrective action for urgent building problems;
- Maintains appropriate records including recording equipment repair history, work orders, daily job card, vehicle records, test reports, and other related data;
- Ensures sufficient material, correct replacement parts and suppliers.
- Initiates ordering of supplies and replacement parts, including properly stocking vehicle and regularly recording of vehicle inventory;
- Liaises with consultants, contractors, inspectors, suppliers, and other departments on maintenance and project work;
- Completes and documents work orders including time and materials and submit to operations department;
- Provides written reports on any inspections and/or tests and makes recommendations to improve performance;
- Ensures duties are performed in a fiscally responsible manner;
- Evaluates status of buildings and facilities as assigned and provides written reports;
- Trains, and evaluates apprentices and other assigned staff; reviews progress and makes changes as needed;
- Performs duties in compliance with school, Operations Department, and Strait Regional Education policies and procedures including occupational health, safety, attendance, work routines, WHMIS, the collective agreement and evacuation plans and the laws of the Province of Nova Scotia;
- Other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Grade 12 High School Diploma or academic equivalent through educational programs such as a Graduated Equivalent Diploma;
- Certification of Qualification as a Construction Electrician with inter-provincial standing;
- Four (4) years experience in the electrical trade with a minimum 2 years in a building maintenance environment;
- Current WHMIS certification;
- Valid Nova Scotia driver’s license;
- Physical and mechanical aptitude to perform a full range of maintenance and manual tasks;
- Additional technical experience or qualified certification in areas such as electronics, industrial electrician, welding, plumbing, pipefitting, and carpentry would be an asset;
- Experience with Building Controlls & HVAC systems would be an asset;
- Ability to support and communicate effectively within the various sites, Operations Department, other Departments of the Strait Regional Centre for Education and third parties including students, school staff, parents, and outside entities;
- Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, schematics, blueprints, electrical code specifications, and diagrams for installation and repair of building systems and equipment;
- Working knowledge of applicable regulatory, building and trades guidelines and codes;
- Working knowledge of the various types of electrical controls and equipment; fire alarms; security alarms, both old and new; and electrical and mechanical building systems;
- Ability to organize and employ writing skills of the nature required to effectively communicate with the Regional Education Centre and external service providers.
