The Tri-County Regional Centre for Education (TCRCE) encompasses the three (3) Counties of Shelburne, Yarmouth, and Digby serving approximately 6100 students in twenty-two (22) schools, composed of 13 Elementary Schools, 6 High Schools, 1 Middle School, and 2 Elementary/High Schools.

POSITION:  Supervisor of School Safety

 

REPORTS TO: Manager of Occupational Health & Safety

 

ROLE: The role of the Supervisor of School Safety is to assist the Manager of Occupational Health & Safety in ensuring school safety remains a priority in schools and operational issues related to school safety are addressed through identified processes and procedures.

 

JOB SUMMARY

Working as a team member and facilitator, the Supervisor of School Safety provides services and consultation to schools and worksites ensuring that they operate efficiently and effectively, that all sites and facilities are held to the highest safety measures and that these measures are maintained in accordance with Provincial Regulations and Policies.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent;
  • Five (5) years of experience in a position with responsibilities that demonstrate leadership skills as well as managerial aptitudes and capacity;
  • Knowledge of the Fire Safety Act and fire safety regulations, codes, and standards are considered an asset;
  • Valid Nova Scotia drivers license;
  • Certificate/Diploma in Facilities Management would be an asset.

  • Considerable experience in coordinating and scheduling;
  • Computer knowledge with proficiency in MS Word, Excel, email (Microsoft platforms such as Excel, Teams, Outlook, Power Point, Visio...) and the ability to learn new applications as it pertains to safe buildings;
  • The ability and willingness to learn and utilize technology as it relates to ongoing communications with schools;
  • The ability to provide oversight of property services at the school level;
  • The ability to work and communicate effectively within a team environment through use of appropriate interpersonal skills;
  • The ability to perform and oversee workplace practices and procedures in accordance with all appropriate policies, guidelines, standards, codes and collective agreements;
  • The ability to employ quality assurance techniques in performing routine inspections of sites;
  • The ability to understand and promote confidentiality as the norm
  • The ability to apply knowledge, experience and commitment in the areas of race relations, cross cultural understanding and human rights;
  • A working knowledge of Occupational Health & Safety procedures which include fire and emergency planning under the policies and procedures from the TCRCE, EECD and the Office of the Fire Marshal;
  • Demonstrated oral and written communications and organizational skills;
  • Promote positive and professional relationships with colleagues, school administrators and all personnel.

 

 

 

TASK DIMENSIONS:

Task dimensions may include, but are not limited to: 

  • Ensure all Fire Binders in TCRCE schools are signed by the appropriate authorities at the required times;
  • Complete fire safety inspections and hazard assessments of all TCRCE sites and ensure full compliance including Dust Collection Systems, Chemical Fume Hoods and Fire Extinguishers;
  • Ensure all relevant safe work practices and procedures are being followed and up to date;
  • Prepare reports, data analysis and diagnostics under the direction of their supervisor;
  • Assist the school administration and the office of the fire marshal with the fire safety plan;
  • Participate in a full spectrum of safety related training and assist in a collaborative process of planning safety related professional development for employees. (Ex. NSCC RHFAC Fundamentals Training when offered by NSCC);
  • Ensure that buildings are safe and maintained to operate as designed- during regular daily operations, weekends, holidays and in July and August;
  • Maintain and Monitor the Zoll AED’s within TCRCE using PlusTrac software;
  • Manage key fobs (Entrapass web), security system codes (alarm.com), and ID badges;
  • Work with Property Services staff to ensure the Accessibility Act is applied at TCRCE sites;
  • Create and update fire escape routes using Microsoft Visio;
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

This is a Non Union position. The salary for this role is Band 5 as outlined within the terms and conditions of employment in accordance with the Education Entities Non-Union Compensation Framework. For additional details, the framework can be found Here
