Location: Hebron Operations Centre, Hebron NS
The Manager of Transportation is responsible to ensure that the Region’s Fleet of Vehicles is in compliance with all regulatory agencies. This role oversees transportation staff, daily garage operations and associated inventories in accordance with regional policies and regulations of regulatory agencies.
Qualifications
- Post-secondary education in Business Administration or equivalent;
- Minimum of 3 years related experience;
- Valid Nova Scotia driver’s license, Class 5 (willingness to upgrade to 2B);
- Should have computer knowledge with proficiency in MS Word, Excel, e-mail, and the internet;
- Should have experience in scheduling and supervision of staff;
- Mechanical training would be an asset;
- Diploma in Geographic Information Sciences (GIS) would be an asset;
- Knowledge in Web Based Bus Routes would be an asset;

Accountabilities
The Manager of Transportation is responsible to:
- Directly evaluate bus drivers and supervise mechanics including tracking performance, qualifications, completing an annual evaluation; ensuring compliance with Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board, Registry of Motor Vehicles, Pre-trip Regulations, Regional policies and the National Safety Code;
- Ensure all garage staff are in-serviced and certified (according to all regulations) in First Aid/CPR, OH&S and WHMIS;
- Assist with bus routing for the Board in compliance with regulatory agencies;
- Participate with bus drivers in-servicing and training in accordance with regional policies; the regulations of regulatory agencies including the Education Act as necessary, regulation updates and safe driving;
- Supervise and maintain bus cleaning standards;
- Assist with school bus evacuations;
- Assist and investigate school bus accidents and reports;
- Maintain school bus garage Motor Carrier Inspection reports and ensures all reported deficiencies are corrected within time limits specified;
- Maintain bus garage mechanical and body maintenance, computer systems, and implement any new computer systems;
- Provide access to technical and mechanical advice and opportunities for in-servicing to all Transportation staff;
- Ensure all buses are registered, licensed, and insured in accordance with all regulations governing a public-school transportation system;
- Responsible for school bus undercoating program;
- Ensure all warranty work is tracked and completed;
- Recommend assignment of new buses and deletion of surplus buses;
- Assist in transportation budget and accountability for expenditures in the transportation department;
- Develop implementation plans to increase control procedures and efficiencies within these departments. This includes managing inventory systems, fuel dispensing and productivity analysis as it relates to employees and procedures;
- Maintain knowledge of the Regulations under the Education Act as it relates to Transportation;
- Assist the Coordinator of Student Transportation with any other student transportation duty that may be required from time-to-time;
- Organize and maintain camera systems & installations;
- Use GEoTab- Install, maintain, create reports;
- Respond to calls from parents regarding student stops, driver concerns;
- Inspect and approve new bus stops. Perform site inspections for requested stops;
- Work with conveyance to organize inspections;
- Create and review time/meterage assessments for drivers;
- Participate in weather calls offering advice on road conditions and recommendations for storm closures;
- Participate in hiring new drivers and ongoing in-servicing;
- Schedule maintenance for special needs vehicles;
- Maintain inventory and assign safety equipment for students with additional needs;
- Inspect, recommend and schedule annual bus body repairs;
- Organize and assist in maintaining fleet and scheduling external contractor repairs;
- Work with D.O.T to request maintenance of roads for buses to travel safely;
