Description:

The Music / English Living Teacher is responsible for teaching and providing support to students within the South Shore Regional Centre for Education. The Teacher will work within the Inclusive Education Policy framework by participating in individualized program planning with school staff and families to maximize learning experiences for students.

 

Required Qualifications and Experience

 

  • Valid Nova Scotia Teacher Certification
  • Bachelor of Education - Secondary
  • University education in English Language- Arts
    • OR a minimum of three (3) years of experience teaching a minimum of 40% English Language Arts within the last five (5) years with positive performance appraisals and/or references
  • University education in Music
    • OR a minimum of three (3) years of experience teaching a minimum of 50% Music within the last five (5) years with positive performance appraisals and/or references

  • Kodaly training
  • Experience teaching Music
  • Professional development in English Language Arts
  • Experience teaching English Language Arts
  • Experience teaching grades 7-12
  • Excellent communication (written and oral and electronic), problem solving and interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to collaborate with school and inter-agency teams to support early intervention strategies, coordination of services, problem solving and program planning;
  • Proven ability to work as a contributing member of school program planning and multidisciplinary teams;
  • Ability to apply knowledge, experience and commitment in the areas of culturally responsive pedagogy;
  • Current knowledge of developmental trauma, the impact on learning, communication and social engagement throughout the lifespan;
  • An interest and willingness to engage in continuing education and professional development;
  • Ability to apply training and experience to develop, implement, and monitor individualized programs and teaching strategies based on the individual needs of students;
  • Ability to employ non-violent crisis intervention techniques;
  • Ability to demonstrate teaching strategies and coach school staff as needed;
  • Ability to maintain and promote confidentiality as the norm;
  • Experience in planning and developing training and professional learning opportunities related to students with behaviours of concern;
  • Proven ability to communicate and work alongside diverse cultural and racial backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated ability to value the voice and contribution of others while remaining open to corrective criticism.
  • Completion of WHMIS and First Aid, or willingness to obtain upon hire.

 

 

Job Description:

  • Provide resource support to students identified through the program planning process who may require an alternate school setting;
  • Demonstrate the ability to work as a team member in all phases of educational programming;
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of all pertinent provincial and board policies related to student services;
  • Demonstrate skills in communicating and working in collaborative partnerships;
  • Demonstrate the ability to work in a variety of teaching models (group, individual, co-teaching, learning centre);
  • Implement strategies, activities, and techniques for promoting student learning based on each student’s prior knowledge, skills, and learning needs.
