Scope of Responsibilities:
The Mathematics Specialist (3-5) works in classrooms with teachers and students supporting mathematics initiatives with the purpose of improving student achievement and teaching practice in mathematics. The Mathematics Specialist provides leadership in the area of mathematics through modelling, co-teaching, and co-planning. The Mathematics Specialist also provides small group and individual intervention to students in response to student evidence, and works in classrooms to support mathematics development and the transfer of skills and strategies in accordance with best practices of mathematics. The Mathematics Specialist works in a team environment under the direction of the Mathematics Coordinator and the school administration.
Qualifications:

A valid Nova Scotia Teaching Certificate
-
Minimum five (5) years recent, successful classroom teaching experience in mathematics instruction within an MTSS framework at the elementary level
-
Deep knowledge of the elementary mathematics curriculum, and the scope and sequence of content across grade levels (P-6)
-
Master’s Degree/Certificate/Diploma in Mathematics completed would be an asset
-
Leadership experience with mathematics initiatives at the school, region and/or provincial level(s)
-
Strong interpersonal and collaborative team skills
-
Experience working with Collaborative Learning Teams and Teaching Support Teams in the use of student data and responding in short cycle responses
-
Experience and demonstrated success in leading and delivering mathematics supports and interventions
Characteristics:
The Mathematics Specialist (3-5) shall have the following characteristics:

Demonstrated classroom effectiveness in delivering elementary mathematics curriculum

Strong mathematics curriculum background knowledge and expertise

Knowledge of and use of provincial and regional professional resources

Exemplary ability to plan, organize and implement effective and impactful instruction

Experience implementing effective numeracy achievement strategies

Knowledge of recent mathematics initiatives (i.e. fact fluency, end of unit assessments)

Strong evidence of collaboration with colleagues to respond to instructional and learning needs of students

Comfortable with collecting and using data to plan for positive impact on learning

The ability to provide mathematics support/coaching to teachers within classrooms, as well as during CLTs, TSTs, and staff meetings in support of student achievement and response to student data

The ability to work with the Instructional Leader in the school to develop plans of action in achieving the SSP goals

Knowledge of the NS Student Assessment Policy and use of balanced assessments as and for learning

Task Dimensions:
The Mathematics Specialist (3-5) shall perform tasks as are assigned by the Mathematics Coordinator and School Administrator. These tasks may vary from time to time with the evolution of the organization and may include, but not limited to the following:

Support teachers and school teams in the achievement of student learning goals by enhancing instructional and assessment practices as they respond to student needs
-
Engage teachers and teams of teachers in reflective dialogue about student data, student learning goals, their classroom practices, and their own learning in relation to identified student needs
-
Embed themselves within school teams such as, but not limited to CLT, TST and staff meetings in responding to student data in short cycles
-
Promote UDL as part of Tier 1 practices within a MTSS framework
-
Collaborate with teachers to design appropriate professional learning experiences
-
Engage teachers in co-planning, co-teaching, and co-reflecting on lessons to improve and enhance teacher practice
-
Model lessons that demonstrate best instructional and assessment practices
-
Assist in expanding the teachers’ repertoire of instructional and assessment practices that are aligned with South Shore Regional Centre for Education policies
-
Use of provincial and regional professional resources (i.e. end of unit assessments) to build capacity in supporting teachers with backwards design, deep curriculum knowledge, and best instructional and assessment practices

Build trust and promote collaboration to improve planning, instruction, assessment, problem solving, risk taking, and decision-making.

Collecting and using student evidence to plan for positive impact on learning

Support teachers in becoming self-monitoring practitioners and self-extending learners.

Differentiate support and flexibly respond to teachers’ developmental stages, learning styles, and perceived needs

Manage their time to effectively support teachers

Provides small group and individual intervention to students in response to student evidence, and work in classrooms to support mathematics development and the transfer of skills and strategies in accordance with best practices of mathematics

Interpret and respond to the changing contexts they experience from teacher to teacher, and from one time to another

Participate in on-going professional learning opportunities as provided by the SSRCE

Plan and deliver professional learning opportunities within the school setting as required

Participate in the region wide mathematics common assessment(s) and PL as required
-
Monitor, assess, evaluate, and report on the impact of the mathematics specialist initiative
-
Maintain and submit records as outlined by the SSRCE
-
Complies with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations.

Performs other related duties as required.
