The Tri-County Regional Centre for Education encompasses the three counties of Shelburne, Yarmouth, and Digby serving 5757 students in twenty-two (22) schools, composed of 13 Elementary Schools, 6 High Schools, 1 Middle School, and 2 Elementary/High Schools.

Assignment:

  • 100% Principal - Elementary School - Grades Primary to six

 

The general qualifications for any administrative positions is as follows:

  1. Either a) A Master’s Degree in Education, preferably with an administrative component.

OR       b) Be actively enrolled in a Master’s Program, preferably with an administrative component and have completed at least two (2) courses towards that degree.

OR       c) An Administrative Block Program.

OR       d) Completed Nova Scotia Instructional Leadership Academy Program (NSELC)

OR       e) in the Regional Centre judgment, have formal qualifications, including a minimum of an undergraduate degree in education and specific training/experience directly related to the vacant position.

  1. Should have a minimum of five (5) years teaching experience;
  2. Superior administrative skills;
  3. A commitment to establishing partnerships with all relevant community groups;
  4. Proven to be collegial decison maker with a demonstrated ability to be decisive and consistent;
  5. Superior skills in strategic planning and implementation of instructional programs;
  6. Knowledge of, and commitment to , quality inclusive education for all students;
  7. Superior ability to stimulate professional growth of staff, through effective professional development programs;
  8. Demonstrated commitment to and above average knowledge and abilities in the areas of curriculum and curriculum development, implementation and evaluation;
  9. Superior interpersonal and communications skills;
  10. Superior skills in facilities management, record keeping, financial management and in the supervision of teaching and other staff; 
  11. Superior skills in the use of current technology as a tool in education;
  12. Awareness of and sensitivity to cultural diversity and cross cultural understanding;
  13. Proven ability to communicate and work alongside diverse cultural and racial backgrounds;
  14. Demonstrated ability to value the voice and contribution of others while remaining open to corrective criticism;
  15. Advocacy of firm, clear and consistent discipline practice; 
  16. Completion of WHMIS and First Aid, or willingness to obtain upon hire;
  17. Demonstrated ability to discharge the duties of a principal as set out in Section 38 of the Education At. 

 

Experience:

  • 2 Years Administrative Experience (preferably at similar grade levels)
  • Teaching Experience (preferably at similar grade levels)

Candidates with an equivalent combination of qualifications and experience will also be considered.

 

Abilities:

The principal of a public school is the educational leader of the school and has overall responsibility for the school, including teachers and other staff. It is the duty of a principal to:

  1. ensure that the public school program and curricula are implemented;
  2. keep attendance records respecting every student enrolled at the school and report thereon to the school board, as required by the regional centre;
  3. take all reasonable steps to secure full and regular attendance at school of the students enrolled in the school in accordance with policies established by the regional centre;
  4. communicate regularly with the parents of the students;
  5. ensure that reasonable steps are taken to create and maintain a safe, orderly, positive and effective learning environment;
  6. ensure that provincial and regional centre policies are followed;
  7. identify the staffing needs of the school;
  8. assist the school board with the selection of staff for the school;
  9. evaluate the performance of teachers and other staff of the school;
  10. assist the regional centre in the development and implementation of professional development programs;
  11. encourage teachers and other staff of the school, students and parents to participate in school decision-making through representation on school advisory councils and committees;
  12. participate in the establishment and operation of a school council;
  13. assist the school advisory council in the development of school improvement plans and, upon approval by the regional centre, co-ordinate their implementation;
  14. assist the school advisory council in the preparation of its annual report;
  15. account to the regional centre for money received from the regional centre or any other source;
  16. account to the regional centre, through the Regional Executive Director, for the performance of the school;
  17. co-operate with the staff of other departments and agencies of the Government to better meet the needs of the students in the school; and
  18. perform such other duties as are prescribed by this Act or the regulations or assigned by the Regional Executive Director.
