The Tri-County Regional Centre for Education encompasses the three counties of Shelburne, Yarmouth, and Digby serving 5757 students in twenty-two (22) schools, composed of 13 Elementary Schools, 6 High Schools, 1 Middle School, and 2 Elementary/High Schools.

Title: Early Childhood Educator (ECE) - Casual on call basis for all programs (Digby County Schools - including Weymouth):


Responsible to:   Supervisor of Pre-Primary & Lead Early Childhood Educator (LECE)


Role:      The ECE will receive daily direction from the LECE and support him/her to create and maintain an engaging learning environment, one in which children are encouraged to explore and create new knowledge through their experiences and social interactions with others. The ECE will support the use of evidenced-based practices and professional judgement to ensure the environment is focused on the holistic development and overall well-being of the child/ren. Working cooperatively with the LECE, the ECE will be responsible to support the implementation of the Pre-primary Program using the Nova Scotia Early Learning Curriculum Framework.      


Qualifications & Experiences 

  • A Diploma in Early Childhood Education (please include a copy of your Certification/Diploma)
  • Should have 3 years of experience working with pre-school children.
  • Should have computer knowledge such as email, internet and Microsoft Office.
  • Proven ability to communicate and work alongside diverse cultural and racial backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated ability to value the voice and contribution of others while remaining open to corrective criticism.
  • Completion of WHMIS and First Aid, or willingness to obtain upon hire.



The Early Childhood Educator (ECE) shall perform tasks as are assigned by the Lead ECE and the school Principal.  These tasks may vary, from time to time, with the evolution of the program and may include but not be limited to the following:

  1. Create a learning environment that is inviting to all who participate in the program;
  2. Observe children on a daily basis to learn more about them as individuals;
  3. Deliver a uniquely creative curriculum that is responsive to the interests, developmental and cultural needs of the participating children;
  4. Support children’s development with materials and resources that focus on emergent literacy and numeracy skills, in particular; play based skills, social emotional skills and gross and fine motor development;
  5. Represent the interests, activities and thinking processes of the children enrolled in the program;
  6. Reflect the children’s lives in ongoing displays and celebrations throughout the year;
  7. Facilitate parent involvement and education as part of the program;
  8. Partner with community-based providers to ensure that children’s’ individual developmental needs are addressed within the context of the Early Learning Opportunities program;
  9. Assess children’s developmental progress;
  10. Participate in a comprehensive, ongoing evaluation of the Early Learning Opportunities Program;
  11. Collaborate with the Early Childhood Educator Support staff person(s) to clarify job functions, classroom management and procedures that will set the stage for a positive environment and document the outcome of this collaboration;
  12. Participate in the overall program evaluation;
  13. Encourage parents to participate in the program at many levels;
  14. Welcome community-based therapists into the program and provide them with specific guidelines regarding their interactions with the children and program staff;
  15. Create a truly inclusive environment for the children and adults participating in the program; and
  16. Other related duties as required.
