Description:

 

The African Nova Scotian Student Success Teacher is responsible for teaching and providing support to identified students of Black/African ancestry within the South Shore Regional Centre for Education. The Teacher will work directly with P - 6 students in collaboration with classroom teachers, administrators, regional staff and families, to provide academic support in literacy and mathematics, which meets the student’s programming outcomes.  

 

Qualifications & Experience:

 

Valid Nova Scotia Teacher Certification

 

Bachelor of Education - Elementary

 

Minimum 3 years of experience teaching elementary (P – 6)

 

Preference will be given to those who have lived experience as an African Nova Scotian in the public education system. If an African Nova Scotian candidate does not apply, the applicant must demonstrate a successful experience working with African Nova Scotian students, families, communities and culture.

 

Abilities/Competencies:

  • Successful experience teaching grades P – 6
  • Knowledge of African Canadian history, with an understanding of the culture, traditions and values
  • An understanding of an Africentric and anti-racist approach and following the principals of culturally responsive and linguistic practice
  • Recent professional development in literacy and numeracy
  • A strong knowledge of early literacy development with respect to the developmental continuum of oral learners, reading and writing
  • Strong knowledge of the elementary mathematics curriculum, and the scope and sequence of content across grade levels
  • Understanding and experience with instruction and assessment procedures, teaching strategies and appropriate intervention strategies for literacy and mathematics
  • Knowledge of authentic, balanced assessment strategies
  • Embed Black/African heritage and culture in teaching strategies
  • Excellent ability to monitor student progress over time and generate a report for SSRCE
  • Collaborative planning, implementation and evaluation of programming
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively with classroom teachers, administration and regional staff in joint planning and instructional design
  • Flexibility in ensuring best approach to students as individual learners
  • Ability to participate in continual professional learning, reflection and collaboration practice
