Qualifications:
• Valid certification as a Bus and Transport Mechanic, or
• Enrollment as an apprentice Bus and Transport Mechanic and willingness to complete the apprenticeship, or
• Current Journeyman’s status in Motor Vehicle Repair or Heavy Duty Mechanics and willingness to complete an apprenticeship as a Bus and Transport Mechanic.
• Valid class 2B license with air brake endorsement required, or willingness to be trained.
• Ability to work collaboratively with other transportation staff.
• Completion of WHMIS and first aid training.
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
• Effective interpersonal skills.

Task Dimensions:
• Completes vehicle maintenance and repairs in a timely and efficient manner following the SSRCE’s preventative maintenance program.
• Repairing and maintaining buses and service vehicles as assigned by the Garage Lead Hand Mechanic or designate.
• Completing any other repairs that are deemed necessary in the absence of the Garage Lead Hand Mechanic or Head Mechanic.
• Works cooperatively with other garage staff on jobs that require more than one worker.
• Ensures job related tools and equipment are well maintained, for example:
• Cleaning and returning tools after using them.
• Lubricating and adjusting shop equipment as required to keep in good working order.
• Keeping work area tidy and orderly.
• Maintaining the safe operation of all equipment used in the Bus Garage
• Attending all courses and in-service training assigned by the Coordinator of Transportation.
• Completes work order forms and other repair records, for example:
• Recording time and materials used on each assignment.
• Lead Hand Mechanic of materials, tools and equipment, and work routines needed to work efficiently. For example:
• Retrieving parts from inventory room as required by the Garage Lead Hand or designate.
• Complies with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations.
• Performs other related duties as required.
BACKGROUND/SECURITY CHECKS:
The South Shore Regional Centre for Education requires all newly hired employees to provide a satisfactory Criminal Record / Vulnerable Sector Check and a Nova Scotia Child Abuse Register Check. We will accept checks completed within the last 3 months.
Regional Office based positions require travel and candidates may be required to provide a valid driver's license. Some school based positions also require travel and candidates may be required to provide a valid driver's license.
