Scope of Responsibilities:
The Mathematics Coach (4-12) works in classrooms with teachers and students supporting mathematics initiatives with the purpose of improving student achievement and teaching practice in mathematics. The Mathematics Coach will provide leadership for professional development in the area of mathematics and attend ongoing professional development with other mathematics coaches. The Mathematics Coach works in a team environment and reports directly to the Coordinator of Programs.
Qualifications:
· A valid Nova Scotia Teaching Certificate;
· Master’s Degree/Certificate/Diploma in Mathematics completed or in progress or demonstrated equivalent mathematics experience;
· Master’s Degree in Leadership, Assessment, Curriculum, Technology, or Inclusive Ed. would be an asset;
· Deep knowledge of the mathematics outcomes P-12;
· Minimum five (5) years recent, successful classroom teaching experience in mathematics instruction within an MTSS framework at the elementary and/or junior high, senior high level(s);
· Previous experience as a Mathematics Coach;
· Leadership experience with mathematics initiatives at the school, region and/or provincial level(s).
· Strong interpersonal and collaborative team skills;
· Experience working with Collaborative Learning Teams and Teaching Support Teams in the use of student data and responding in short cycle responses;
· Development of professional resources and learning opportunities to support best assessment and instructional practices
· Bilingual with the ability to coach in a French Second Language environment would be considered an asset
Characteristics:
· The Mathematics Coach (4-12) shall have the following characteristics:
o The ability to effectively deliver the mathematics curriculum;
o The ability to provide mathematics support/coaching to teachers within classrooms, as well as during CLT, and TST in support of student achievement and response to student data.
o The ability to work with the Instructional Leader in the school to develop plans of action in achieving the SSP goals.
o The ability to analyze problems and formulate recommendations;
o The ability to develop and maintain positive relationships that foster a climate of trust and respect;
o The ability to maintain a healthy and positive perspective on change and support others in the change process;
o The ability to apply knowledge, experience and commitment in the area of race relations, cross cultural understanding, human rights and diversity;
o The ability to demonstrate strong oral and written communication skills;
o The desire and ability to engage in continuing education and professional development;
o The ability to maintain and promote confidentiality as a norm.
Task Dimensions:
· The Mathematics Coach (4-12) shall perform tasks as are assigned by the Coordinator of Programs. These tasks may vary from time to time with the evolution of the organization and may include, but not limited to the following:
o Support teachers and school teams in the achievement of student learning goals by enhancing instructional and assessment practices as they respond to student needs.
o Engage teachers and teams of teachers in reflective dialogue about student data, student learning goals, their classroom practices, and their own learning in relation to identified student needs.
o Embed themselves within school teams as part of CLT, TST and staff meetings in responding to student data in short cycles.
o Promote UDL as part of Tier 1 practices within a MTSS framework.
o Identify and analyze teachers’ understandings of the curriculum and collaborate to design appropriate professional learning experiences.
o Engage teachers in co-planning, co-teaching, and co-reflecting on lessons to improve and enhance teacher practice.
o Identify and analyze teachers’ instructional and assessment practices and assist in expanding the teachers’ repertoire of instructional and assessment practices that are aligned with South Shore Regional Centre for Education policies.
o Build trust and promote collaboration to improve planning, instruction, assessment, problem solving, risk taking, and decision-making.
o Support teachers in becoming self-monitoring practitioners and self-extending learners.
o Differentiate support and flexibly respond to teachers’ developmental stages, learning styles, and perceived needs.
o Manage their time to effectively support teachers and the mentoring/coaching process.
o Interpret and respond to the changing contexts they experience from school to school, from teacher to teacher, and from one time to another.
o Participate in, as well as plan and deliver a range of professional learning opportunities.
o Participate in the region wide mathematics common assessment(s) and PL as required.
o Assist in the creation of common assessments and benchmark assessments as needed.
o Attend meetings and ongoing professional development provided by the EECD and the South Shore Regional Centre for Education.
· Complies with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations.
· Performs other related duties as required.
