Description:

The Elementary Teacher is responsible for teaching and providing support to students within the South Shore Regional Centre for Education. The Teacher will work within the Inclusive Education Policy framework by participating in individualized program planning with school staff and families to maximize learning experiences for students.

 

NOTE:

 

The school has P-5 students in one classroom. The successful candidate will be required to teach multi-grade students and all subject areas including specialist (Physical Education, Music, French). Experience teaching multiple grades and subjects is an asset.
 

Position requires daily travel on a ferry to/from Chester. The ferry ride is approximately 1 hour each way. Ferry may suspend service for various reasons, resulting in an overnight stay on the island.

 

It takes approximately 15 minutes to walk to the school from the wharf. The successful candidate would be walking in all types of weather. 

 

Position may require successful candidate to be the sole adult at the school for a portion of the day or for the full day. Strong behaviour management skills are an asset.

 

There is a possibility for additional substitute days.

 

Hours:

 

The position is 4 days a week (Monday and Tuesday required plus 2 more days)

 

The successful candidate will be required to:

 

  • Take the 7:00am ferry from Chester. The ferry arrives on Big Tancook Island at approximately 8:00am.  

 

  • Take the 4:30pm ferry to Chester from the island on Monday and Tuesday. The ferry arrives in Chester at approximately 5:30pm.
     

Take the 1:30pm ferry to Chester from the island 2 other days a week. The ferry arrives in Chester at approximately 2:30pm. The days will be mutually agreed upon between the administrator and successful candidate.

 

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Valid Nova Scotia Teacher Certification
  • Bachelor of Education - Elementary

 

Abilities / Competencies:

  • University level courses in special or inclusive education
  • Professional development in Program Support
  • Professional development in literacy education
  • Experience teaching french
  • Experience teaching Phys Ed
  • Experience teaching music
  • Experience teaching grades P-5
  • Excellent communication (written and oral and electronic), problem solving and interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to collaborate with school and inter-agency teams to support early intervention strategies, coordination of services, problem solving and program planning;
  • Proven ability to work as a contributing member of school program planning and multidisciplinary teams;
  • Ability to apply knowledge, experience and commitment in the areas of culturally responsive pedagogy;
  • Current knowledge of developmental trauma, the impact on learning, communication and social engagement throughout the lifespan;
  • An interest and willingness to engage in continuing education and professional development;
  • Ability to apply training and experience to develop, implement, and monitor individualized programs and teaching strategies based on the individual needs of students;
  • Ability to employ non-violent crisis intervention techniques;
  • Ability to demonstrate teaching strategies and coach school staff as needed;
  • Ability to maintain and promote confidentiality as the norm;
  • Experience in planning and developing training and professional learning opportunities related to students with behaviours of concern;
  • Proven ability to communicate and work alongside diverse cultural and racial backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated ability to value the voice and contribution of others while remaining open to corrective criticism.
  • Completion of WHMIS and First Aid, or willingness to obtain upon hire.
