Reporting to the Coordinator of Student Services, the Autism Teacher Specialist is responsible for professional development, leadership, and support of programming and services for children and youth with autism spectrum disorder.  The Specialist is responsible for the assessment and analysis of student and school needs in this area, for recommending the allocation of related services and supports, and for the monitoring and evaluation of the service delivery model.  The Specialist will represent the AVRCE in collaborative endeavors with the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development and partner agencies in related areas.  The Specialist will work with other Student Services staff in the development and implementation of student program plans.  In addition, the successful candidate will partner with Programs and Services Consultants and staff, in the development and implementation of professional development plans and school success planning.

 

Training/Qualifications/Experience:

  • Valid Nova Scotia Teaching License is required;
  • A minimum of five years of successful resource or classroom experience is required;
  • Masters degree in Special Education or Inclusive Education or related field is preferred;
  • Training and experience in the education and support of children and youth with autism spectrum disorder, including challenging and complex behaviours;
  • Demonstrated commitment to respect for diversity and social justice;
  • Experience with and knowledge of provincial and regional policies including the Inclusive Education Policy and other Special Education policies;
  • Experience with and knowledge of the Individual Program Planning Process;
  • Experience in planning for and facilitating professional development in the Special Education field;
  • Excellent leadership, management, team-building, communication, and interpersonal skills;
  • Well-developed decision-making and creative problem-solving ability; and
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted.
