Summer Literacy Camp Counselor (2 Positions)

The Annapolis Valley Regional Centre for Education is inviting applications for the casual position of Summer Literacy Camp Counselor.  We encourage applications from qualified African Nova Scotians, racially visible persons, women (applying for non-traditional positions), persons with disabilities, Aboriginal persons and persons of the LGBTQ+ community.  AVRCE encourages applicants to self-identify.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Summer Literacy Day Camp Counselor facilitates recreation programs for participants in lower elementary grades and reports to the Camp Leader.  The counselor assists the camp leader in designing and implementing recreation activities within a planned curriculum.  Supports for persons with disabilities in programs may be required to develop a specific program plan. 


Other responsibilities include: daily duties such as greeting parents and participants, supporting activities, ensuring the safety and enjoyment of participants, organizing equipment and supplies, preparing for activities, assisting in the distribution and collecting permission slips for outings, assisting in organizing outings and special events, participating in staff meetings, assisting and supporting the instructor during literacy instruction.


Specific recreation training will be required prior to the start date of the camp and is mandatory. Other training will also be provided as part of employment.  

 

QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
• At least one season/summer of experience working or volunteering with children in a recreational setting or equivalent experience (such as working with children in a school setting).
• Knowledge and understanding of Healthy Child Development .
• Previous experience working with persons with disabilities an asset.

 

Technical / Job Specific Knowledge, Abilities and Training
• Current certification in Emergency First Aid and Level C CPR an asset.
• Screening through the Child Abuse Registry and a Police Records Check.

WORK STATUS:  Casual – July 8, 2024 to August 16th, 2024.

 

HOURS OF WORK:  8:00 AM to 3:30 PM.  Weekdays.  Must be willing to work a flexible work schedule as required. 

SALARY:  Non-Union, $18 per hour (plus 4% vacation pay).
