Term, Non-Union Position (5 hours/day)

Location:  Advocate District School

The Chignecto-Central Regional Centre for Education, with approximately 22,000 students and 3,000 employees, is seeking a Lead Cook position for Advocate District School.

 

The Lead Cook oversees daily operations, as well as food preparation and service of school food programs at Advocate District school, under the direction of the School Principal. Working in a dynamic, high-pressure, fast-paced environment, the Lead Cook is responsible to uphold the values of the School Food and Nutrition Policy and the Inclusive Education policy and is committed to promoting equity, helping create healthy school food environments and interacting with students in a way that is friendly, positive and maintains trust and confidentiality. 

 

Main responsibilities include:

  • Oversee cafeteria operations such as procuring and invoicing for food supplies, daily bookkeeping of monies received, financial activities, maintaining daily service schedule, and addressing day-to-day issues that may arise in collaboration with the Principal.
  • With the support of the CCRCE Food Service Facilitator and Public Health Nutritionist, ensure adherence to set menus and participate in reporting duties as required.
  • Prepare and serve food from scratch for school food programs, primarily the lunch program.
  • Perform kitchen responsibilities such as maintaining food safety logs (e.g. temperature checks), washing dishes, cleaning and organizing work areas and equipment, and garbage removal.

 

Requirements:

  • High school diploma, GED or suitable equivalent
  • Culinary of food service management course and/or experience preferred
  • Experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completion of food safety training program (or willingness to complete upon offer of employment).
  • Familiarity with computers for ordering food supplies, accessing email and files/shared drives.
  • Able to perform physically strenuous duties of the position, including heavy lifting (possibly up to 50 lb), walking and/or standing for the majority of each shift, and working in an environment with heat fluctuations.
  • Availability for early morning shift start times as required.
  • Driver’s license and access to a personal vehicle would be considered an asset.
