Thank you for your interest in pursuing a teaching career with the Cape Breton Victoria Regional Centre for Education.  The Cape Breton-Victoria Regional Centre for Education is responsible for the administration of the public school system within the boundaries of Cape Breton and Victoria Counties, supporting approximately 12,000 students in 38 schools.

Please complete the following instructions to apply to be a substitute teacher with the Cape Breton Victoria Regional Centre for Education:

 

  • Complete your employment and education history as per Success Factors Application process.

 

  • Upload a copy of course transcripts from all universities attended (downloaded copies from the internet will be accepted).

 

  • Upload two written references from individuals who have observed the quality of your teaching or pre-service teaching (i.e. teacher, principal, university supervisor/advisor).

 

 

  • Child Abuse Register Check: Applications are to be sent through the digital service found at https://beta.novascotia.ca/apply-child-abuse-register-search. They will also continue to accept paper applications via mail. Once you receive a letter from the Department of Community Services stating that your name does not appear on the register, we will require the original letter before processing your application for substitute teaching.  Please mail or drop off the original Child Abuse Register letter to the CBVRCE Regional office at 275 George Street, Sydney, NS B1P 1J7.

 

  • Please mail or drop off the original Criminal Records Check, including the section for persons working with "children" and "vulnerable" persons, by the local police department or RCMP.  A criminal record check dated within the last three (3) months may be sufficient provided it includes all criminal charges or convictions of which you are aware at the time of submission.  Please note that you will have to pick this form up, they do not mail it to our office.  We will require the completed criminal records check before processing your application for substitute teaching.

 

  • All potential substitute teachers with the Cape Breton Victoria Regional Centre for Education are required to read/view and adhere to all policies as per the Statement of Understanding. The Policies can be found here.  The signed Statement of Understanding form must be uploaded or dropped off at CBVRCE Regional Office.

 

  • In addition, please read the Employee Confidentiality Agreement document that is included and sign where indicated and attach with your application. The signed Employee Confidentiality Agreement must be uploaded or dropped off to CBVRCE Regional Office.

 

  • To Potential French Substitutes- Please be advised that all new French substitutes are requied to undergo an OPI (Oral Proficiency Interview) in order to be considered for permanent, term or long-term substitute employment with the CBVRCE. This requirement is to ensure an appropriate level of French language proficiency. The OPI will assess language competency according to the New Brunswick oral proficiency scale. Please contact Suzanne Aucoin, French Consultant, at aucoins@gnspes.ca to discuss your French proficiency and arrange an interview time. Please note: If you already had an OPI assessment, completed one with another provincial regional center, or you have received a DELF (Diplôme d’études en langue française) certificate (minimum of Level B2), please provide the results to the Human Resources Department of the Cape Breton Regional Centre for Education.

Checklist of Supporting Documents to be uploaded before you submit your application:

  • Direct Deposit Form
  • Void Cheque 
  • Transcripts
  • Two Letters of Reference
  • Signed and witnessed Statement of Understanding
  • Signed and witnessed Employee Confidentiality Agreement

 

The following "ORIGINAL" Supporting Documents must be mailed or dropped off to CBVRCE:

  • Original Child Abuse Registrar dated within the last 3 months
  • Original Criminal Records Check with Vulnerable Sector Check dated within the last 3 months

 

Please Note: During periods of heavy work volume, processing times may be delayed three to four weeks once the application and all documents are submitted.

 

Salary is as per the NSTU Collective Agreement
