Position Title: Transportation Clerk/Dispatcher
Employee Group: NSGEU

Hours Per Day: 8 hrs/day
Start Date: August 17, 2026
Hourly Wage: $23.41 to 28.49/hr

 

 

 

Qualifications:

  • Completion of Grade 12 and a Community College Administrative Program
  • Three years related experience in a public office (preferably in education or transportation).
  • Proficient in MS Office (Excel, Access, and Word software)
  • Strong interpersonal and time management skills.

Task Dimensions:

Maintains accurate and up to date transportation files, for example:

  • Maintaining bus drivers’ and spare drivers’ record books.
  • Entering bus drivers’ additional time forms, absentee forms, extra-curricular bus trips, spare drivers pay and entering absences in AESOP and SAP as per payroll deadlines.
  • Maintaining substitute bus driver roster, constrained by route systems and collective agreement provisions
  • Maintaining up to date national safety code files.

 

Provides efficient bus dispatch services, for example:

  • Answering incoming calls from drivers on the mobile radio, assesses urgency of requests and explains operation and emergency procedures.
  • Responding to public inquiries and requests for information from parents, students, public and teachers.
  • Responding to bus stop requests, using software provided and communicating policies relevant to their request
  • Dealing with parents, students, principals, teachers, etc in a professional, confidential manner at all times.
  • Maintaining back road closures plans and updates SSRCE website.
  • Preparing pre-primary & primary packages.
  • Explaining departmental policies and procedures as necessary.
  • Scheduling extra-curricular trips, following related procedures and contacting spare drivers as needed.
  • Liaising with school administration to ensure extra-curricular forms are completed timely and accurately.
  • Maintaining substitute bus driver spare roster and rotation list for extra-curricular trips.
  • Professionally communicating school closure announcements, late routes, route alternations via email to school administrators and the media and other driver broadcasts that effect schools and students.
  • Maintaining and updating Transportation’s Facebook page with relevant information
  • Ensuring regular school bus driver absences are covered as required in AESOP, disseminating regular driver route sheets to spare drivers, notifying the Transportation Department of spare coverage. 

 

Provides administrative support for the computerized bus routes, for example:

  • Assisting Transportation Analyst with school bus route sheet updates.
  • Gathering student location, bus loading and related route information.
  • Conducting database searches, prepares routing reports as required.
  • Maintaining and updating student transportation information and generating reports as required.
  • Composing routine correspondence and drafting correspondence for signature.
  • Providing clerical support to the Transportation Department.
  • Assisting with meeting and in-service/workshop preparation, including memos, lists of participants, photocopying of materials, preparing agendas, picking up and preparation of food, ordering food, etc.

 

  • Complies with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

 

 

BACKGROUND/SECURITY CHECKS:

The South Shore Regional Centre for Education requires all newly hired employees to provide a satisfactory Criminal Record / Vulnerable Sector Check and a Nova Scotia Child Abuse Register Check. We will accept checks completed within the last 3 months. 

Regional Office based positions require travel and candidates may be required to provide a valid driver's license.  Some school based positions also require travel and candidates may be required to provide a valid driver's license.
